Recommendation? New To Knife Making What Should I Do?

Hey guys I am new to the knifemaking scene and am going to make a buck 119 style knife with a five and a half-inch blade. I would use the knife when hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. I hear that 420HC works well. I would like to know where I could find it. also, I would like to know what thickness I should use it will be 1 in tall. it will not have a hidden tang, I want to try and braze some brass to the steel tang and have that be the visible part for aesthetics. if anybody has done the brass tang thing and has tips feel free to drop them down below! (sorry if my terminology is trash) I plan on using a bocote handle, threaded brass pommel, and brass gaurd.

I am not a knifemaker, but there are definitely better steels out there than 420HC.
