Hi my name is Richard I'm 53 from Leeds England and I have just started knife making . I've made two knives out of spring steel . I've just managed to get my forge hot enough to weld to metals together, but I couldn't see the Damascus pattern . I was wondering if that was because I didn't use the right metals . Can anyone help me please

Could be that the two steels are just too similar to contrast well. Typically, with high carbon pattern welded steel, something with a higher nickel content is used, like 15n20. 1084 or 1095 is often used for the darker etch, and 15n20 will be the brighter etch.
There are many other pairs you can go with, but 10xx/15n20 is probably one of the more common.

How about some pics of what you have though?

What Drew said^
Plus, in order to have Damascus steel you'd need to fold, twist, cut and draw out the billet multiple times to then have any discernible pattern after etching.
Even if you had two different steels, one with nickel, just forge welded together and then etched you'd have one side lighter than the other. You don't even have San Mai (three layers) You have Ni Mai (two layers)

Thank you for your reply . I did have 3 of one steel and 2 of the other. I'll put up some pics up of what I have done to date when I have finished work. Thanks

Hi Richardd welcome to the forums
Those pics didn't load
But that might be my fault as I'm on my phone in the bath

The problem is at my end the pictures didn't load because my phone isn't working properly I'll try again tomorrow
Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum. I haven't got many pictures I've only made two and a half knives. Lol
