I've just made two knives out of spring steel now I've managed to get my forge hot enough to weld . Can anyone tell me if I can use brass in my billet for my next one . I know I can't have it on the edge.

Short answer - No.

It is fun to race ahead full steam when getting into knifemaking, but it is wiser to learn to walk well before you start running. The fact that you asked the question shows you haven't learned the basics of forge welding yet. Steel welds at temperatures well above the melting point of brass. There are other reasons, too. Generally, it is best to keep brass out of your forge.
Take your time, have lots of fun. Make a bunch of knives, and then, when you have the hammer skills, make damascus.

BTW, to know where a person on Bladeforums is from, click on his name and he drop down window will show his location ... if he filled out his profile. This is how many folks get an offer to visit a nearby maker. Yours just says male, 53, because you didn't put the rest of your profile info in.
