Alrighty. This post is going to be really link heavy. I have noticed that one of the default responses to new sharpeners is to go to youtube and sift through the crap and watch sharpening videos. This is a great idea for those who can sit down with a bowl of popcorn and watch some guy sharpen a knife for two hours and call it a good show (you know who you are). But for most of the beginners out there though, the patience needed for sharpening hasn't sunk in yet, so i have tried to gather together some of the videos that have helped me the most. YMMV. I do highly suggest checking out this link before moving onto the videos first.

And now onto the videos.
keeping simple
This one is from cliffstamp. It really simplifies the sharpening process. No fancy stones or anything. I hope it helps you to not get discouraged by the cost of all the new stones you "need".
all the grits
This video is by Crimsontideshooter(?) here on Bladeforums. This is a great example of going through all the grits for a mirror bevel. He also uses a slightly unorthodox technique. A mix between eastern scrubbing and western long strokes.
sandpaper convexing
I don't really use this style of sharpening but it is very cheap and popular. There probably are better examples of this out there on the internet, but i liked this one.
everything
This is a list to a playlist by a chef on youtube. MrEZCooking. He does a really good job at showing the basics of sharpening different types of knives using eastern and western style strokes. Ignore his terminology and theory though. Neither are in agreement with those here. His techniques work though and deserve an attempt of your own.

At some point in your journey to honemeister. Someone, somewhere, is going to mention Murray Carter. He has a very solid technique, but be careful when listening to him. He is very dogmatic about how a knife should be sharpened.

These two are channels. Both are Forum members here. Mag's is a great channel to go to to find videos to watch while sharpening and Knifenut's is a good one if you want to watch a pro show off a little. Both are great examples of waterstones at their finest.

Another fellow Forum member here. He give a great example of what can be done with your "standard" oil stones as well as some more interesting mediums. Well worth the price of experimenting.
WARNING
If for some insane reason, you find yourself wanting to continue freehand sharpening. This could be you. (quite jealous of this guy's collection actually)
And that sums it up for me. I know this seems a little lazy on my part. Not actually teaching or explaining anything. But if you really knew me, you would be thanking me for not trying that. If you have a video or other link, let me know. I'll toss it up.
same idea, better execution
