Hello all

I am new to the World of knives and was wanting to get some
expert advice on what kind of blade to get as my first knife.

I do a lot of camping and would like something that could take
heavy usage and cutting. Something that is not too expensive,
maybe something under $100 dollars if possible. I want something
that is quality.

Thanks

there are tons of great quality knives for under $100, the real question is what kind of tasks do you want it to accomplish? do you want it to chop and split wood? make kindling? prepare food? if you are just looking for a good all around large camp knife to handle it all then the Kabar Becker BK9 would be a good choice. If that is too big for what you want then perhaps the BK7 or Becker Companion would be more to your liking. They are all great knives and reasonably priced.

you came to the right place for info. i would suggest having a look at what esee company has to offer in their fixed blade line. they have a sub forum here.

Im no expert on the topic, but from experience here on the forums I know there will be people soon to chime in and direct you towards [RAT] now ESEE cutlery for their price to quality ratio.

well im not sure of how large a knife you want, but you should look at the ESEE knives, ESEE4 and ESEE6. they are around the 100 dollar price point, they are made in America, and have a no questions asked lifetime warranty. if you manage to break them you get a brand new one.

You may also want to check out Micheal Morris's knives. He posts around here sometimes and his knives are both awesome and affordable - right around that $100 mark.

Griptillians are under $100 (most of em) - They're tough, and the AXIS-lock is really safe once it's engaged (I'd read they're tested to 800 pounds) - plus you can beat the living hell out of them... if they break, Benchmade will bend over backwards to either fix or replace it for you, as long as you weren't stabbing rocks or something foolish.

Welcom to Bladeforums!

I'm going to move this to our Wilderness & Survival Skills forum, where the kind of knife you're looking for is a big part of their discussions.

Maybe post this on the individual makers forums and ask what they can do you for that amount....maybe one of them is slow on work and you'll bag a bargain !!!

Aw hell, get a Mora 2000 and get it over with. Under $30 and it will do everything you need now.

Work on your rationalizations from that point.

Welcome. :)

what kind of camping and where?
car camping, canoe trips, hike in/out?
mountains, desert, plains, banjo country?

do you want a general purpose utility knife, something for dressing out small or large game, a food prep knife, etc...?
generally I suggest 2 blades - a smaller one for fine work (like a Mora or an ESEE 3, 4, or Izula) and a larger blade such as an ESEE6, Becker Campanion, or Buck 119. If you want something large for chopping brush and splitting firewood, then a BK9, ESEE Junglas,or even an Ontario machete in 12 or 18" length. The ESE6 & Junglas will be outside your $100 budget.
For folders, I'd suggest an Ontario RAT1, a swiss army knife (SAK) camper or huntsman, an Opinel #8 or #9, or a Buck folding hunter or ranger. Kershaw also has several offerings under $40. These are low cost knives, but not low value/poor quality.

IMHO I would start off with a Izula by ESEE.

You can't go wrong with any knife from ESEE.

small fixed blade (izula is great), and a 9 dollar tramontina would have ya set for most of your woods chores. you'd have money to spare.

Anything from ESEE is great, but you can also look at any Beckers, or perhaps look at the makers here to see if they can help you.

Don't forget Becker. Mmm, Becker...

Look at Moras (510, #1, #2, Triflex Craftsman, and 2000), Becker BK2, BK7, BK9, ESEE 3/4/6, Fallkniven F1.

More info will help to give you better advice. What kind of camping do you do? Where? What tasks you want your knife to do? what length? Are you looking exclusively for a knife or are you open to a knife/machete/saw or knife/hatchet/saw combo?

I second this post.

I'd add the question; Are there other cutting tools you'll use in conjunction with this knife like a hatchet, saw, or machete?
