Any thoughts or suggestions about Great Knives under $400. I'd prefer under $200.

Busse, swamp rat, scrap yard, ontario rats, Ranger knives RD series, Fehrman knives and bark river.

Hey now! Doesn't sound like you are too new to knives!!

As for suggestions, put these on your list:

Strider SMF
Strider GB
Emerson Super SOCFK B
Spyderco Manix

You need to check out Bark River Knives. they are unbelievable quality and the price is hard to beat. they run from about $100-$400 and I would put them up against any of the others you have listed.

Fallkniven would also be a good choice.

If you're interested in checking out ZDP189 steel, you can get it on a handful of different Spyderco models and all of them are under $200 each.

Just started buying 8 months ago. I've always loved knives, guns, flashlights, pens, and sunglasses.

A big reason is that I moved from Massachusetts to Florida. In MA, all the knives that I liked were illegal or I didn't see anyplace around to buy them. I'm not big on buying through the internet. I like to support local businesses. I also don't go through self checkout lines. It takes jobs away from Americans. I'd rather stand in line than go through self checkout.

Bark River and Fallkniven are definitely on my list. The problem that I have is I like to touch a knife before I buy it. I want to see if it feels good in my hand. Everyday more and more knives get added to my wish list.

For example, I was very interested in a SOG Flash II. I picked it up, opened and closed it a few times and put it back. It just didn't feel right in my hand. The handle felt too thick, the AO was slow, I could buy another Griptilian that I love for about the same price.

I've never heard of ZDP189 steel yet. What models of Spyderco use it?

zdp189 is a laminate. very hard, somewhere near 65 on the rockwell scale.

i believe william henry was the first to use it. i had a titan with the zdp. veeeeeerrrrry sharp!

Spyderco has both laminated ZDP ( Caly 3, calypso, jess horn), and solid ZDP in delica and endura. In the Delica and Endura lines it adds about $30 to the price. The Caly 3 ( carbon fibre, laminated zdp) is really turning heads for it's extreme slicing qualities. It's a knife I would reccomend to anybody for their connection.

Kershaw uses ZDP ( solid) in the Titanium frame lock leek, a sprint run, as well as a mini cyclone titanium/zdp model. Another real high performer from Kershaw is their new version of the trusty Blur in SG2 steel. An assisted opener in SG2, the super steel from the top of the line chefs cutlery line of Shun, from Kershaws parent company , Kai. Real good knife at a reasonable price. Some more to think about if you like trying new super steels. Joe

Handling a BRKT knife is tough. I tell people to find a good internet dealer who will let you try the knife and if you don't like it return it for a different one.

BRKT knives are a real pleasure to hold and they can't be beat for value (IMO).

Do you know of any good internet dealers that are willing to do that?

We do that--the only caviat is that the knife cannot be used when it is returned and any returned knives are returned for credit towards another knife. If you want a refund, then there is a restocking fee. All knives ship to you at my cost and back to me at your cost.

The truth is, I have only had a couple BRKT knives returned--ever. They are an AWESOME value!
