I am new to knives so please don't laugh. I need to find a good tactical folder and a fixed blade hunting/survival knife. I have only $50.00 to spend on both. I know this isn't much but ther has to be OK knives for that price. Right? I am not expecting anything too great but I want something better than the junk that the pawn shops have. I would even go with a used or surplus knife. Any suggestions, links, advice would greatly help me out.

For fixed blades, you should look into scandinvean knives. Very good for their price range which is very low, some clear down to about $10. Don't let that turn you off of them I have a set of 3 sloyd knives from frosts of sweden ( not to be confused with the american company Frost, which deals in fantasy knife crap)The set was around $30 for the 3 and they are extremely well built, and take a great edge. The fit and finish isn't the best , but they are definitely functional. There are a few at www.woodcraft.com . And a big selection of them at www.chaicutlery.com . Be sure and look at frosts, and I think the other company that had fairly low prices was kellam.
For a tactical folder, a spyderco delica 98 is a great knife. It can be found for between $40 and $50 usually, and if your lucky you may find one on sale. I would try and get one if it will fit into your budget along with the fixed blade. If not, there are some other choices that are good knives and cheaper for you to look at. I'll have to think about it some more, and I'm sure others here can help you out to.

It'll feel better when it stops hurting.

For a GOOD tactical folder for UNDER $50, take a look at the CRKT Crawford/Kasper "Fighting Folder":

I can't really offer much help on the "fixed-blade for around $50", as all MY "fixed-blade" knives cost FAR more than $50.

(You MIGHT want to take a look at the "Knives For Sale/Trade" forum here at "BladeForums", 'tho, AS I did see a SOG Seal-Pup going for only $40, including shipping a few days ago (8/20/00), and I think it might still be "for sale".).

Welcome to the Forums - I think i'd read a lot of the posts here for some ideas about both knives you are looking for - Frost of Sweden is good - take a look at the Short Marine Ka-Bar too -it's about $40.00 some places - I'll add my agreement to the Delica but if you are short on funds - Columbia River Knife and Tool makes some nice stuff - probably not state of the art materials - but very servicable for the price! Good luck and enjoy a growing passion!

I would agree with the CRKT mentioned above...they are very good folders at any price, but fortunately most are under 50 dollars. Also, Outdoor edge makes a nice line of folders that are very comparable to CRKT.

For fixed blades, you might check out models from Ontario and Cold Steel. Also consider the old model 119 from Buck.

zipster, welcome to the Forums. You really have several options open to you. You could do the Frost of Sweden fixed blade and an Opinel folder for under $30. Maybe James Mattis will jump in here and offer some other suggestions.
Or you could go here, http://onestopknifeshop.com/store/crkt.html
and look at a Stiff K.I.S.S. (for your fixed blade) and either a KFF, or Pointguard folder and still stay in your budget.
If I were you, I would just start with the folder, look at CRKT, Spyderco, Outdoor Edge, Cold Steel, and find a knife that you really like and will serve your purpose until you have a little more cash available for a fixed blade.

WELCOME!! Don't be ashamed of being either new to knives OR that you have $50 to spend. I would imagine that if you would poll all the forumites...their first knife was NOT a Microtech auto.

SO...enjoy learning here on the forums. You will be amazed at the great amount of information that passes through these cyber halls everyday! I learn new stuff daily...and spend WAY too much time on the site.

I have the CRKT KFF...very knice knife for the money...or even for more money actually.
I have a Cold Steel Medium Voyager, tanto, full serrated...great little cutting machine. The serrations go on cutting forever. The fit and finish are above average.
I have the SOG Seal Pup...great little fixed blade. I paid more than $40 like mentioned above, but is still pretty reasonable.
I would suggest watching the forums in the "Knives wanted to sell" section, or post (once you have your eye on one or two you would like) in the "Knives Wanted to Buy" section.
If you want to buy new...check out http://onestopknifeshop.com and they have all of the good ones! Plus, Spark and Mike are the guys who run the forums and sales to their site help BF!

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of knives!

For a good fixed blade under $50, go to Cold Steel's web site (www.coldsteel.com) and order their catalog: it is free. You can get "seconds"- knives with cosmetic defects- for under $50 which would be well worth your $$

To echo the others like a broken record: CRKT, CRKT, CRKT,...

They are not just affordable knives. They are GOOD, affordable knives.

Best known for their "designer" folders. However, they make fixed blades as well ranging from the Ed Halligan STIFF KISS skeleton knife, to their BIG SKY HUNTER fixed blades made of AUS-6. They sell at "Premium Knives" for about $30.
