Hi all,

I have very little knowledge when it comes to the World,
of knives and joined this site in hopes of learning more and
getting some advice.

I'm looking at a daily folder that I can carry and also use
for self defense if ever need be.

Don't know where to start but, I looked at a (Buck Vantage
Pro) last evening and wanted to know what ever ones
opinion is on this knife?

I liked that I was able to open it with one hand.

Thanks for your help guys.

I think the Buck Vantage Pro is a good knife and IIRC it comes with S30V steel which is a plus.

How much do you want to spend? You will get about a million opinions here. I like to use youtube to look at how knives are going to look in the hand so you might consider that.

Good luck choosing and welcome to BF.

The Vantage Pro is well thought of . It's a good knife. Also look at the Spyderco Delica. It has a 3" blade length, one hand opening, and pocket clip like the Vantage but it is a little slimmer and imo carries better.

Welcome to BF

I will beat the rush and suggest the Spyderco Delica for a good starter EDC. The steel is good, the design is proven , the price is reasonable and it can be opened with one hand.

Depending on your budget you have a wide variety of options to choose from. For a SD folder, I'd suggest either a waved Endura or a waved Delica (the Delica would be more practical in EDC tasks like opening packages or food prep, in my opinion).

However if your place of residence allows it, I'd suggest getting a Concealed Carry Permit and legally carry a firearm instead of relying on a folding knife for self-defense (but that's a whole other discussion)...

The Vantage Pro is a very good choice. I have the Vantage Select, same thing but 420HC steel instead of S30v which is superior. You could also look at the Spyderco Tenacious for around $30 to $40 dollars depending on the sites you visit. Go to youtube and look up guys like NutnFancy, Cutlerylover, and Edgedweapon88, they all have great knife reviews. Also the suggestions by the above posters lmentioned the Delica, which I have never used but heard great things about. You could also try the Spyderco Byrd line, great slections there for a cheaper price. Like the Cara cara, that might be a little big for what you want though, but there is also the Raven, and Flight of the Spyderco Byrd line. Or if you like Buck, try the Bantam knives, have three different sizes, all good knives for the money.

My Buck Vantage Pro is second only to my Kershaw Skyline in competing for the most carried EDC knife out os about 6-7 in my EDC rotation. On paper it should stomp all my EDC knives but there is just something about my Skyline that makes it my favorite. Perhaps it is the light weight, the blade shape, fit & finish, effortless & fast flipper, the deep finger groove or a combination of all these things.

The Vantage Pro has better steel in S30V that is heat treated by the legendary Paul Bos. This for only $5 more than my $35 Skyline. It is very comfortable and has more weight to it. It is a great design. You could do much worse if you did not get the Vantage Pro. Both are US made BTW if that is important to you.

I have the Buck Vantage Pro and I like it although I did have to send it in to buck because the blade centering was off, and it would rub the liner when I opened, and closed the knife. You might also check out the Spyderco Tenacious, for the price it's also a very good knife.

I would look at the Spyderco Byrds as well. The Crossbills impress the death out of me. They are great as daily carry for my cutting chores, cheap, well built, and I would not want anyone coming at me with one with evil intentions.

Welcome to BladeForums, Tacks.

Two questions:

1. How much are you willing to spend?
2. What's the legal blade length limit for a pocketknife in your state?

I would suggest the Delica 4 from Spyderco, for an EDC. But that Vantage Pro is also a very good knife, especially for the price. Like someone else suggested, checkout YouTube for videos. Add Cajunblaze to your list of reviewers from YouTube.

I carry a Spyderco Tenacious as my main EDC and back up defense knife. I also carry a Kershaw Blur which is my main self defense knife. they both make very good EDC self defense knives, if you get the tenacious i would suggest putting a zip tie through the spyder hole so you can open it by pulling it out of your pocket. make sure the knife is tip up other wise it wont really work too well. good luck with your decision!

WELCOME Tacks.

For self defense, just about any knife that locks will work -especially if that is a secondary consideration and you want it to primarily be an EDC knife (every day carry)

The Buck Vantage line is very high value. The Vantage Pro uses S30V steel which holds an edge well, but is a hassle to sharpen, especially if you are just getting into knives.

If you are learning to sharpen knives, you may want to get a steel that is easier to sharpen -that way your knife will always be sharp.

For this, I would recommend the Ontario RAT 1 folder. It has a very nice steel and can be found for $30 shipped. After you get the knife, look for a good sharpening system (of which there are many).

Good luck, whatever you get I am sure you will like it.

Welcome to bladefourms!

Pretty much what everyone else has said,

Buck vantage Pro is great..

Spyderco Delica is also great, i like the waved one personally...

In conclusion, you cant really go wrong with either :D
