New to knives, what's next?

Hello all,
So I'm fairly new to this knife hobby/obsession. I was given a Case Doctor's knife (6185) for Christmas this year and that kinda sparked an explosion that's been building ever since. Since then I've acquired two Kershaw folders, a Leek in the all black DLC coating and a Scallion in the plain stainless finish. Another Case knife was added in the form of a 2010 Case Barlow (62009) which was inspired by my grandfather who used to carry a similarly styled knife. I also managed to dig out an old Victorinox Camper that I had gotten as a child, and added to that the new Victorinox soldier as well as one of the old soldiers that was one of the final production runs for here in the US. Two friends who are into knives have sent me a Victorinox Midnite Minichamp and an Alox Cadet as well as an Opinel #8 with stainless blade and Bubinga handle.

Suffice it to say this seems to be growing out of control....it will probably be held in check only by my limited medical school budget. With that in mind what are some 'gold standard' knives in the 'affordable'- say $60 and down price range that I might consider adding to expand my collection in the future when money allows? I tend to like knives that either have some interesting background or which I can actually carry- so typically no blades over 3.5"...small knives are great for me...but I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks to everyone for reading and have a great day

Hello and welcome, ferramentum2013!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "gold standard" knives, but there are several good options within the $60 range. I'd recommend the Spyderco Delica 4 or the Buck Vantage Pro for starters.

Good luck! :)

+1 to the delica and buck vantage pro.
I would also check out the rat-1 folder and a few kershaws.
Also check out ESEE knives. Their izula runs around $50 or so, and they have the best warranty in the business IMO

I prefer bigger knives (Spyderco Military is the perfect knife in my opinion) but of all the smaller ones I've had.. I like the BM Mini-Grip the best. Sold feeling and even for being small it fits decent in my big hands. Action is smooth and 154CM is good stuff. The Spyderco Dragonfly is a cool little knife too.
