I have a strong Norwegian lineage on my father's side of the family and have always had a strong interest and connection with Norway because of it even though it was never an issue or stressed within my family. I also have always had an appreciation for the scandinavian style working knives of Finland, Sweden and of course Norway. Puukos, Moras, and Tolleknivs etc. I watched this one eBay for a week and was lucky enough to win it. I am very pleased with it although it is taking some work to get the scandi grind back on it the way it should be.

I thought I would share it with you all as you have been so kind to share your finds with me and others. Made by Brusletto, it is called a Dolen which appears to mean 'wander' or 'roam' in norwegian/dutch and is engraved on the sheath. It has a 3.6" blade and 3.7" handle of curly birch with metal (silver?) caps. I am afraid I have been unable to ascertain the type of steel used.

Very interesting knife, I like it. Looks to be quite ergonomic to me. Made with use in mind, but still very attractive .

Very handsome.

Congrats!

I have a shorter version of the knife

Go to FaceBook and look for Brusletto

Beautiful!
I dont speak any scandi languages, so forgive if my google fu is lacking, and correct me if mistaken
I believe Tollekniv means whittling knife. Similarly, I believe Puukko means wood knife..

handle of curly birch with metal (silver?) caps.
Brusletto currently lists German Silver for end caps, and high carbon stainless for a blade option

I love Birch handle and this is a great looking knife. Thanks for sharing it with us and keep us informed about how the edge progresses.

Love the Scandi knives! Bruslettos are sexy. Chelck out Helles if you like the style. Same sexyness, and they are great performers!

Dølen, or Dölen as it is written on the sheath is the name of a place here in Norway. Not sure if it has anything to do with cutlery tho. Tollekniv comes from the norse talguknifr and means to form or to whittle. Very handsome knife you got there and a great representation of a classic.

I've had more than half a dozen Brusletto knives and have found them all to be excellent. Nice knife

As suggested, I went ahead and posted in inquiry on FB for more information on it. I got a reply a few hours later requesting that I email them with more photos of the knife and sheath, which i did. I got a reply a day later from the CEO. It confirms that the design and style make it just what I was looking for. I thought it was extremely good customer service as well, especially considering that I obviously bought the knife second hand.

Dear Rob,

The knifes name is Dølen, as stated on the sheath, which is an ancient and dialectic old Norwegian word describing a person coming from a remote valley with low population.
The steel used for this knife is Sandvik 12C27 and in the caps it is German nickelsilver, and the handle material is curly birch. The sheath is made of tanned cowhide. The design is a Brusletto-design based on another and older model we had and was made to be a traditional Norwegian knife. The knife was made in the period 1985 - 1995.

Kind regards
