After being introduced to this pattern in a recent thread here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1225831-Case-XX-62055

I decided I needed one. Mine arrived yesterday, and it is a great little knife.

I am extremely impressed with the overall 'stoutness' of this knife in such a small package. Very strong springs. Expecting it to be a larger peanut, I was a little surprised it was as long as it is (3.5"). I guess, though, that we all get surprised by the size of a knife in the hand (either larger or smaller than expected) when we've only seen pictures of a particular knife. I was also a little surprised that there are no half stops (again, probably because I was expecting a larger peanut.) There is also a little bit of a gritty feeling, even after a good WD40 flush. I assume that this knife hasn't really been carried before, and expect it to smooth out with use.

Back in the other thread, I was trying to figure out if my knife would come with delrin or bone scales. I have to admit that I'm still not sure. The shield has a circled "Case", which was said to indicate bone (though not always), and tapping it against my tooth it feels like bone, but it almost looks polished to me (which I suppose it could be. Even the bottom of the circle around Case on the shield appears to be faint, although this could be normal as I don't have much experience with older Case knives.) There are 'hints' of pores, but I just am not sure. The color is a very (VERY) dark brown, almost (or perhaps) black. Under bright light, there is a 3D appearance to the smooth part of the scales, with hints of a lighter hue underneath, which leads me to believe that they are bone (all the delrin I've ever handled has been a very 'flat' color without depth.)

As I handle more older Case knives, I see that they are the quality that GEC is now. (The new Case knives, with a couple notable exceptions, have been underwhelming to me, with extremely spongy springs and off center blades.) This knife has perfectly centered blades, and as mentioned strong springs with nice, loud snaps. The only thing that's off is that the backspring on the pen blade sits a little proud when the blade is open.

I do like the pattern--seems like the perfect size. It really makes me want to pick up a #66 Calf Roper jack, and if any are ever made with a spear main, I'll be all over it!

OK, here are some pics:

(That rusty thing is a bridle that my son found when we were metal detecting the other day--very neat find.)

It looks like bone to me. Judging by your description it doesn't sound like it has the uniformity you'd expect from synthetics. Beautiful knife by the way!

The '6' in the pattern# indicates any bone (smooth or jigged) and any other jigged material (including synthetic/Delrin and wood laminates). Both the jigged Delrin and jigged bone versions would be the same pattern# (62055).

Yours definitely looks like bone (polished). Nice knife.

What does the 3 stand for David?
Thanks, Mark

Can you post a close up of your knife Eric? It does look like bone, but it is much darker than most factory dyed that I have seen from that era.

Thanks,
Mark

OK, here are some more shots. I didn't use a flash, but did try to light it up with a flashlight. In the bottom 2 pics, you can see what I meant by the "3D" of the material, the way the lighter brown hue shows up, deeper down in the scale:

Eric, I do believe your knife is bone (black bone is what I call it and you see it in mid 1970's Case pocketknives). Here is one I have like that, a 1977 6318 - the jigging is smoother in many of the bone handles than it is in the Delrin handles (the 1973 Case 6332 in the bottom picture is jigged Delrin - and has the circled Case shield too). Nice knife you found there - hope you enjoy it). OH

Ps I TOLD you it won't no Peanut! :D

Thanks OH. The other difference I see - and it may mean nothing - is that the jigging on the Delrin goes all the way to the bolsters, where it doesn't on the bone. While I wish it was a bit lighter in color, I'm pretty happy with the knife. It's a great pattern that Case should reintroduce. Maybe in a 3" version...
