I should be receiving am XM-18 3.5" Spanto in S35vn. The question I have for the group is what steel they would choose if you happen to be someone who uses their knife fairly rough.

I have had my share of chipping on certain knives with certain steels, but have always dealt with it myself. I am not looking to complain, just interested in finding what will most likely work best for me. Thank.

I haven't had chipping issues with S35VN. I had a roll in my Sebenza with S35VN but only after cutting a root and going into a rock pretty hard. Sharpened right out.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with any of Rick's steel choices. He has a top notch heat treat, which is very important!! I have 20cv and s35vn and i can't tell a difference.

I really like 20CV. That being said, the heat treat seems to be right on the mark with Rick's knives and I probably couldn't tell the difference if I didn't know. But, I really like 20CV, the way it sharpens, holds an edge, tough, rust resistant...

I've had rhks in 20 cv, s35v, and cts-xhp. I have use each pretty heavily and I can tell you from experience that you can't go wrong with any of them. They are all excellent choices for a hard use knife. You will not have any problems with s35v. It is a great knife steel. If you use your knife heavily you made a great choice picking up a hinderer and an especially great choice on a spanto. Congrats on your XM brother!

If your just cutting you'll be fine. If your gonna use it to pry or in another fashion then it will likely chip. I have s35v slicer and use it everyday for work and it beat it to death and it does chip. But any steel will chip with the abuse I give it. But a few passes on the sharpener and it's like new. 20cv is great too, holds up very well. If your gonna abuse the blade profile it to a larger degree, that will give you a stronger edge.

Thank everyone. I was on the fence as to whether I should hold off for a cts-xhp. I am sure after playing with the XM-18 I will want an XM-24 Spanto. My chipping issues have been with cpm154. I have heard of S35v heat treat issues, but it sounds like Rick's heat treat is spot on.

Your auto-correct may be removing the t from Spanto.

24 Spantos are excellent hand-filling assurance that what needs done will get done.

As for the blade steels, Rick's got it figured out so we don't stress about it at all. I use the 20cv and s35vn every day. I'll just sum it up this way...if one significantly outperformed the others then only one steel would be offered or a huge premium would be applied to one steel over another.

Speaking of XM-24 Spanto's, I just used mine to cut some of my gloves at work. I use brown cloth gloves for certain tasks at work, and recently they've been making my wrists really sweaty. So, out came the 24 and just freakig sliced away the bottoms (opposite fingers side by wrist). The fat spanto blade sliced just like a razor blade through two thick brown gloves. Honestly, I was a little impressed. Figured I'd have to "saw" a little bit to get it going but I hardly did. XM-24 to the rescue!

If you have a chance to own a 24, do it. It's such a manly, beefy knife that's sure to accomplish anything.

Thanks, all.
N2K thanks for the heads up on the "Spano" - "Spanto". It was probably my poor typing.

All ready went out and bought bronzed standoffs, screws and stabilizer. Now I need the bronze pivot screw. Then I will look at getting an XM-24.

Still waiting on the XM-18 3.5", but was wondering for those that have the XM-24 do you use the thumb stud or the flipper to open the blade?

Flipper more often than not on my flippers and thumbstud on my non-flipper :).

I mix it up between thumb stud and flipper. I'd say I probably use the thumb stud a little more often.
