New (to me) style handle

Anyone ever seen one like this? I suppose this style has a specific name and use. Thought I'd consult the witdom of the forum to help me out. Thanks!!

Euro Axe head gets a new life; soiled haft with a naturally rejuvenating handle. Is there are drainage pebble in the bottom of that iron pot?

Nice and slender like vintage hafts used to be. And a nice large swell. It looks perfect!
