I have just recently became interested in old knives and don't really know what brands to start out with, where to buy them, etc. Could all of yall possibly point me in the right direction? I was thinking maybe go for a USA Old Timer? Or should I go for something else? I would like to start out pretty cheap if that's possible. Anyway thanks for your time, and I hope this question is in the appropriate place. :D

If I were you I would start by purchasing or if you can get them from a library books on cutlery & get as much information as you can. There are tons of information out there from brands to styles to companies. I'd also recommend you attend a local knife show & see what all is out there (or at least in your area). Schrade Old Timer is not a bad place to start - they're good quality working knives. I was fortunate enough to have a hardware store near my home when I was much younger that carried the John Primble line of knives from Blue Grass Tools. Then again, you can't go wrong with Shipleigh, Ulster, Keen Cutter, Utica, Van Camp, Camillus, K-Bar (don't forget Case).... just too many

Its pricey, but the Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values, 4th Edition, from Feb 1997, is the best reference book available for collecting knives. 512 pages, lots of photographs, and illustrations. By Bernard Levine. If you pay attention to Amazon, you can find it sometimes for a good price. They do not last long at all if they are under $30.00.

I am fairly new to collecting as well, I find myself as I go on changing buying "needs"...have a look at what the guys here have suggested, also have a peek through our "old knives thread"...some there will be way over..dont forget the older German knives too...some of theose are just stunning-as are the older Sheffields.
Schrade, old timers..bigbarn has rattled of a few beauty makers in there as well!
How many older ones have you got so far?....If you get hold of me, I will send you a nice older knife that should help you off...pm my friend.

I don't have any "old" knives yet. The oldest knife I own is probably only 5-7 years old. But, I am in the process of getting a USA Old Timer to start myself off. I think I am going to get a TL 29 after that. But anyway, thanks for the replies!
