Hi all, I'm new to the board, new to Randall's an new to knife collecting! I've carried a USMC Kabar for years and it has served me well. I came across my first Randall about a week ago. A 1-7 stag and have been reading on this forum since.

I may be acquiring 2 or 3 more today via a trade with an aquaintence and pretty excited about that.

I have what will appear a probably very stupid question to most of you. I was hoping that I might get some feedback from a user point of view rather than collector point of view because I plan on not only displaying my Randall's to look at, but also using each of them once in awhile.

My question is, what is the real difference between a comparable sized Randall and a knife like the USMC Kabar? I know the Kabar is a factory produced to military spec knife, I believe in 1095 and coated in black paint with leather handle. I understand that, but other than the collector value of a Randall, what makes it such a better knife?

Thanks in advance for your words.

There are many sources of information on Randall knives, Google is your friend.

This is the Shop websites page on their history: http://www.randallknives.com/history.php

The hand-forging makes their blades very strong as well as the hand finishing giving them a higher quality appearance than a Factory produced knife. Kabars are a decent knife for the money, but not at the same level as a Randall or any other custom makers knife. For me, I guess it's the combination of the history and the quality that make them worth it to me. It gets as personal as Chevy vs. Ford/Mopar, etc..
