I just bought a beautiful new Randall... a model 25-5 w/white Micarta handle... looks very much like aged Ivory.

My question is how should I store the knife? Can it discolor the blade if I leave it stored in the sheath? My instructions say to put some WD-40 on the blade, but if/when I get to use the knife and cut some meat I don't want to eat the WD-40.

Any suggestions? Should I store the knife out of the sheath? I'd like to keep this in great shape and some day give it to my 7 yr old son when he's a bit older.

store it out of the sheath, and give it a coat of Rennaisance Wax once in a while (gives you an excuse to play with it) they don't seem to need any more attention than that.NRJ.

Any more info on Rennaisance Wax... Where to get it, how much, etc???

Thanks for the tips. And yes it's fun to just 'play' w/it a bit... :D

Thanks for the tip

What does everyone think of Japanese or Chinese camomile oil... use it on my Japanese high-carbon kitchen knives, for the edibility :-)
And what's the problem with keeping it in the sheath, exactly?
Thanks,

The best coating for knives -- including those for cutting food -- is plain old mineral oil. It is a USDA recommended coating for food contact surfaces, and does it's job well. A very light coating is all that's needed. Even if you wipe it off well, it still leaves enough in the pores of the metal to do it's job -- precluding oxygen. ...and it's cheap!
