Okay, so I'm a newcomer to the knife scene but have spent the last week or so developing a taste for Scandinavian style knives. I am looking for a fixed blade belt knife for camping/backpacking. Roughly four inches of blade...not too expensive...but want something that I'll be able to use and cherish (if that is really the right word?) for the next 20 or more years.

So far I've taken a particular liking to the Helle Fjellkniven. I've been able to find only a little about it and personal experiences with this knife. Are there any particular opinions about it here?

Also is it worthwhile to pick up a cheaper Mora (711?) as a spare? Of course you'll say yes...

Thanks,
-CA

You can't go wrong with the Mora's. I have a bunch of them and for around $10.00 each, you can't go wrong.

I don't have any experience with the Helle Fjellkniven.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

You're off to a good start. Helle definitely makes good knives. Pick up a basic Mora also and you'll see they're good for everything from kitchen to fishing to woodwork.

Have you loooked through www.ragweedforge.com ?

Oh, yes...I've already found ragweedforge...which is perhaps much of my troubles (there are so many good choices). So, if not the Fjellkniven (still undecided), which would be the best alternative?

Fjellkniven is a good, general use knife. I just don't happen to have one. I do have a Nying, so I know how sharp their blades can get, but that's a different sort of knife.

I have the Helle Brakar. I dont know what that means in norweigan, but it is definetly a good knife, although i dont have much expirience with any expensive knives really.

I'm a fan of my Helle Eggen. I chose it over the Fjellkniven because the blade has a bigger belly.
