Hello all i have a bunch of knives that need to be sharpened i usually buy and us a knife till dull then just get something different. But recently I have been buying case traditional folders and a few benchmade knives. I would really like to lean how to sharpen them. I have been looking at the smith tri stone or the works feild sharpener. Are either of those good to learn on or is there a different recommendation? Thank you

You can find several excellent books on knife sharpening on-line. There's plenty of advice on this forum as well. I prefer freehand sharpening but many knife nerds swear by the various sharpening systems.

For Case's traditional line in their 420HC stainless or carbon / CV steel, the Smith's Tri-Hone you mentioned will work fine for those. For the Benchmade knives, many of which are in more carbide-heavy, wear-resistant steels, any number of diamond hone options would handle those best. So, the WorkSharp Field sharpener should do well, if you're already considering that. You do have a ton of options though.

Welcome to the Forum. An awful lot can be learned here.

By the way, a lot of consolidated sharpening tips and info can be found in the 'Sticky' threads permanently fixed at the top of the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment page. If you haven't already been looking at those, it's a good way to get started.
