I've been using a pull through pocket sharpener but I threw it away because it is doing more bad than good. So I'd like to know, what is a simple sharpening method? I only know of sharpening stones and rods. But I'm looking for something simple (for someone new) and basic. All I want is to be able to sharpen my knife back to hair shaving sharp

Nothing is more basic and simple than a benchstone. Deciding on which stone or stones to purchase can be a little more difficult.

First question though, what s your budget?

I have no idea. I'm willing to spend a little extra for something that's quality and will get the job done, but I'm not a professional and don't want/need the best of the best. I don't really know what a good budget is, because I don't know how expensive they are. I'd be willing to spend anywhere from 40-100 I guess

From the info given thus far I would say a diamond plate would be one of your best starting options. The pull through has done its damage and you will at minimal need something coarse enough and fast enough for getting the bevel back in shape.

I would recommend the Coarse/Fine DMT Duosharp with base. This would give you a coarse option for fixing your damaged bevels and a fine option that can easily go beyond most any factory edge.
