Hello Blade Forums! I love a sharp knife and i`m using a very old honing oil stone, but i cannot get a edge sharp enough to cut paper or shave, though i have sharpened for almost an hour every day trying to get it sharp. Are there any good tutorials you can recommend that will teach appropriate pressure and angle on an oil stone and just how to sharpen correctly in general? I'm using a soft Arkansas as a rough grit, hard Arkansas as my fine stone, compass honing oil as oil and a leather belt as a strop. Anything helps. Thanks!

A non-free alternative is Murray Carter's Blade Sharpening Fundamentals. I got the digital download version from his site and found it helpful.

Hes using a water stone do you sharpen the same as a oil stone as a water stone?

The scrubbing method he uses on his 1K stone can be used exactly on an oil stone. The backhoning/stropping method he uses on his 6K polishing stone cannot be done on an oil stone or other fixed abrasive for best results. A hard strop or piece of balsa, MDF, other hard surface loaded with compound would be a good non-waterstone approximation.

Matt-

Here are the videos for my favorite fast, small, light, and easy sharpner, the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Good for plain or serrated edges and many other tools.

I like stones but for a newbie or someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time getting a working edge (I'm really not interested into turning a knife into a straight razor) then the Spyderco Sharpmaker is the ticket, IMHO.

Glad I could help, Hank

It's true, I've gone to a new level in sharpening. I'll have some new videos from a new location here in the future. Stay tuned :D
