I was drawn into the SOG knife company by their new knife the Flash, and from what I've seen in that knife and others that they have made they are great knives, with wonderful looks and funcionality.

Wondering what you guys find to be their strong points and what other knife company would you compare them with, Benchamade?

And could someone with a SOG X-42 Recondo please post some pictures of it, I like the looks of it and was considering it for a new fixed blade because I only own one fixed blade, a Ka-Bar USMC.

Bali-flipper,

Welcome to the forums. From my experience at owning knives from all three -- SOG, Benchmade, and Spyderco -- I'd say they all make comparably priced knives, in a wide range of styles which are excellent value for the money, have good reputations, and excellent customer service. Each company has their hits and misses, and trademarks. I would buy more based on the individual knife rather than who manufactured it. Although, I'm sure Ron would like you to be a loyal SOG customer. :)

Although, you'll hear brand loyal people insisting Brand X is the best, it is so highly, highly subjective that it's silly to insist one company is better than the other. "Better" is such a personal thing. It's just a matter of taste: Pepsi vs. Coke, Mary Ann or Ginger,...

Out of the three, SOG's strengths are that they have a huge range of fixed blades. They also have what is arguably the most feature packed folder in the Flash. Yes, it looks like a winner. The only gripe I've heard against their knives is that they have too many 50/50 blades and don't offer enough plain edged blades. I think that's slowly changing though.

I like a lot of knives produced by all three companies.

That said I like BM for their bali's (ok they are the only one of the three who make them, but BM bali's kick arse, as I assume 'Bali-Flipper' would know better than most.) There are also a lot of great folders produced by BM but I would probably not get any BM, other than a bali, unless it were one of the automatic knives that people rave about.

I like Spydie folders and they see time in my EDC rotation. I really like the Gunting for its versitilty and it is one of the best folder designs ever IMHO. The Chinese Lum folder is also a winner, mine is as sharp as my straight razor. The Massad Ayoob is a great knife an it is so slim that it is my 'i have to wear a suit today' knife.

Sog have fantastic fixed blades that I adore. I collect a lot of custom fixed blades some of which are in excess of $600 and Sog knives still have a large part of my knife collecting heart (and wallet). The Pentagon knives kick arse and the PEII folder is a permanet EDC, it is beautiful. The vision series kicks arse!
And Sog have also forced me to start replacing my Leatherman's, those bastids....

If I had to rank them I would go 1)Sog
2)Benchmade
3)Spyderco

But that is just opinion and all of the knives play a part in my collection. I also love Emerson knives and have a smattering of knives produced by other companies and custom made knives. I find however that for the price Sog are amazing and offer customer service that is brilliant.

my $0.02.

Holy...(I'm not going to curse this time)

What's that BMF fixed blade prototype? That's no "compass in the handle" POS, that's for sure! Could you propose to Mr. Frazer that he call it the BMF!

Nice!

Oops, I was cursing albeit in acronyms.

I would agree that each have their strengths. I have a soft spot for SOG (obviously!:D )...

BM makes some nice automatics (I prefer MT...), and they make Balisongs...

Spyderco has a huge following, and make some great knives, I just am not a fan of the styling.:footinmou

SOG make some beautiful knives, that happen to "kick butt" as well:D :D :D

SOG fixed-blade knives and multi-tools are THE BEST! The folders...I only have one; a Tomcat, and that one is also excellent.
