Hi. I just bought my first Spyderco. I like SOG knives a lot, but I have heard a lot of good things about Spyderco too. I bought a Native CPMS30V with the serrated edge. I am generally impressed with the knife, but I have a question about the edge profile. Between the tip of the knife and the beginning of the serrations, there is a short plain edge. It is only beveled on one side and I have not had a combo edged knife which was profiled like this before. Is this a Spyderco design and what is the proper sharpening technique for it? I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker for all of my knives. Thanks for the information.

Consider it part of the serrations, I believe it is ground at the same angle as the rest of the blade. I can't help you with the sharpmaker setup, I've never used one.

Sharpen it as you would a normal knife using the corner of the stones only. Also, drag the knife down the stone slower so that it can slip into each serrate. Finally, only sharpen it on the ground side, not the flat. Just swipe the flat side every five to ten swipes to keep a burr from forming. Treat the small plain edge portion the same as the serrates. Just follow those steps, and they are just as easy to sharpen as normal knives.

If you still have your video, you can watch Sal show you how to do this, himself.
