I was an usher in my cousin's wedding, and as a thank you the groom gave everyone a shaving kit and a disposable blade straight razor. The kit is cool but the razor leaves much to be desired. So I want to buy a new razor, non disposable. What would y'all recommend for a beginner? I've been shaving with what I have for about a week and really enjoy it, but as much as I love knives I'd like to have a "real" razor. Thanks in advance.

Hard to beat Dovo for a good new razor. Or if you like check out the whipped dog for their "sight unseen" specials. Old razors that have been cleaned and sterilized, NOT restored, and honed to be shave ready. You can pick up a strop pretty cheap from them too.

Shaving with a straight is very different than using a shavette. Angle, weight, edge feel, all different. Personally, I keep a shavette in my dopp kit along with a gillette ball end tech so I don't hav to worry about maintaining a straight in a bag that might allow it to rust quickly.

Thanks. I just ordered a Dovo. Thanks for your help.

Make sure that the razor you ordered is "shave ready". Meaning it was honed by someone as opposed to the razor being somewhat sharp from the factory. You can shave with one from the factory but it usually is not sharp enough to get a comfortable shave.

Also you will need a strop to maintain the edge.

Check out straightrazorplace.com for more information on shaving.
