Hi guys, I am new to swamp rat and I am REALLY liking the HRLM. I just had a couple questions. First is how does the steel hold up? Is it stain resistant? and how does it hold an edge? Also does Swamp Rat have a similar warranty to Busse?

The steel is incredible, (I prefer it to INFI ) and will take an unreal edge at any edge angle. It is not really stain resistant, as it is nowhere near stainless. It holds an edge for a very long time, and is easy to touch up. The warranty is the same, and is actually "written" better! (But it's the same.)

Thanks, as far as stain resistant I knew it was not stainless but how does it do compared to 1095?

In my limited experience, it seems to rust easier but that's not scientific by any means. Even so, I think it's a better steel. I don't know which is tougher but the SR-101 takes a screaming edge and holds it better.

its edge holding is better than infi and CPM3V and it will take a laser edge.
it will rust FAST its simalar to L6 in rust resistance.
same waranty as Busse.

1095 rusts easier. SR-101 (51200) is much tougher, it's like 5160 with better edge holding. 1095 has 0 chrome, 51200 has .17-.22. So it will rust, but it's mostly surface. You have to really neglect it to get it to pit. And that's if there is no coating.

Thank you very much for the responses. I will not be neglecting any of my knives, but to know it can stand up a little by itself is good to know.

Is that tested experience or anecdotal?

I only ask b/c I've yet to get REAL answers after 4 years buying Busse knives. Everyone keeps testing if this sharpened pry-bar will break after having an elephant use it to climb a sheer rock face. But with so many EDC knives in all 3 camps (Busse, Swamp, Scrapyard), I'm curious if anyone has done real edge-holding testing on all 3 steels.

OTOH, Jerry used one of my fav's - a Basic 9 - to push cut thousands of pieces of rope. I wonder if we are comparing Superman to Mighty Mouse at this point. ;)

Through my use of INFI and SR101, I have not been able to determine which one will hold an edge longer, both are fantastic. The subtle differences in the two steels are that SR101 will develop surface rust fairly easily. Infi is very stain resistant. It seems that SR101 will take a bit of a keener edge than INFI, but INFI will probably hold it a bit longer with heavy use, batoning, etc...

Frankly, besides the stain resistance... there is not very much difference in performance between SR101 and INFI IMO. I'd say the same for CPM3V, which is also an excellent steel if heat treated properly. They are all very comparable with edge retention and durability in my experience.

For the money, SR101 is very hard to beat. It is a tremendous value, and I would recommend it to anyone. Throw in the lifetime warranty and excellent customer support of Swamp Rat and it is easy to see why they are so popular.
