Hi-
A few years ago, while enjoying a campfire with some fellow hunters, a guy showed me a knife he made. Intrigued, i thought that it would be a hobby I would like to pursue some day. Well, that time is now!

I am looking to get into this a little bit at a time. I had some thoughts on how to approach this:

Get a good book for beginners- Any suggestions?
Find a local craftsman to learn from- I live in Indianapolis, IN
Start with some minimal equipment needs- Any suggestions?

As you can see,I am clueless, but motivated!

So any help offered is appreciated and I am sure you will be seeing more of mee as I work through the training wheels stages.

Thanks guys-
Jordy

$50 knife shop book
Check Knives 2004 for the listing of local makers
The archives here are a fantastic treasure of knowledge.

Keep reading these threads! I have learned lots of good stuff here and met some very kind people. Get a copy of Wayne Goddards "$50 knife shop", pick up some back issues of BLADE magazine. Get catologues from Koval, Jantz and other knife suppliers. Take apart the knives you have to see how they work. Go to knife shows, drool over expensive customs on internet sites. start squirrelling away money from your wife. find a job where you can work 2-3hrs a day for the same (or more money) than you are making now. Grow a beard. Buy a gross of bandaids and make sure you have good health insurance. Buy and use good safety equiptment - God gave you only 2 eyes and 2 ears (you can get by with 9 fingers) have fun.

Try a kit knife first. Easy to put together with common handtools. If you buy from knifeandgun.com I think they include instructions...(can't remember).

Just order the parts and come back here and we'll help you put 'em together...:D

Thanks for the good feedback. Keep it coming! I have a few calls into local knifemakers to see if they will let me stop by for a day or two per month to pick up the trade.
Thanks Again-

Jordy

My advice,,,(Im new too)...my advice is to read a bit from here, then try to make a knife, You learn how to make a knife, by making knives ..if you run into any problems at all, just log-on and ask us.

There are ,,like Millions of guys who visit this site from all over the world, chances are that no matter what question you have or what problem you have run into, there is a guy here that has just the answer you need...

just get busy, make something, and ask questions,,,,,also, this site has the search thingy, so chances are that if you got a question, someone has already asked that question at one time or another, so a fast little search should help a lot too...
