Good afternoon:

I am interested in learning this craft. 25 years ago I use to make jewelery. I remember how satisfying it was to create a work of beauty. I was wondering, HOW DO I GET STARTED? are there any books? how about a basic beginners Kit that is simple and helps one learn a few of the basics, and gain his/her confidence. I think this could be a relaxing past time. any help you could give me would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to Shoptalk!

There's plenty of ways of getting started, but I think the best way is to read all you can and ask your questions here. Friendly bunch of people here, always eager to help. Read the sticky about Who the Heck are ya, and post your name in the sig so we know what to call you. ;)

That said, there's a lot of great knifemakers in your neck of the woods, and maybe they'll lend you some good hands-on. Lots of books and videos on the market right now, and I am sure if you have experience with jewelry you will catch on fast, and you'll have lots to offer here as well.

Welcome!

Bein' from Oklahoma, you are fortunate to have a down home group, The Knife Group, headed by Ray Kirk, Rakerknives. Check 'em out. bruce

Get "$50 Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard, it talks about forging and stock removal, and also how to get started cheap. Once you decide which direction to go in there are a number of other good books. Reading old posts here and on other forums will also give you a wealth of knowledge.
