Normally, I'm a lurker on the Traditional Forum...just thought I'd jump into the conversation on this forum since I actually carry a Becker daily as compared to some of my more traditional knives. I only own one Becker...a BK14. It's my walking buddy, my woods tool, my work bag knife, and my CCW knife. I ended up with it because I couldn't make a decision between an Izula and a BK11. Most days I appreciate the unique combination of features this knife has...somedays I wish it had a bigger handle. I have access to an amazing woodshop, so adding a bigger set of scales is a future mod for me!

I found this forum when I was trying to figure out the difference between a BK7 and a BK16. The information has been extremely helpful, but unfortunately addictive. There seems to be a lot of love for the 16 out there...so it's on my Christmas list...there's only so many shopping days left!

Just one question for any BK14 owners...if you use the original sheath, how many of you take the little flippy retainer off?

Welcome to the forum. Pull up a stump; lots of friendly, knowledgeable folks ‘round here.

Good choice in the sixteen. My absolute fav woods bumming knife. Perfect size, weight, and price point for me. I’m sure you’ll find it to your liking.

As for the 14 sheath, I have the old-style sheath without the flippy thing on it. The problem with the older sheaths was that they were too hard, and tended to dull the knife edge if you weren’t careful. They remedied it by using a softer plastic, with the trade off that the sheath could potentially loosen up enough to not hold the knife securely. Hence the locking tab. As long as the knife is still tight in the sheath, and you’re not hanging it off your neck upside down, no reason you couldn’t take off the tab if you wanted to streamline the sheath a bit. Just make sure you check the sheath’s retention every once in a while. Hope that helped.

Welcome Snow Walker  I also prefer kydex . If I was carrying the 14 in the factory sheath I'd leave the flippy on ;) The 16 is also one of my favorites too

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you here. The 14 is a hell of a nice blade.

The 14 is my go to edc knife. I originally used the factory sheath with a metal tdi clip on my belt with the flipper removed and had no issues without it. After a month, the tdi clip would bend and get loose, so I got tired of flattening it and switched to kydex with a tek-lok. It hugs my body more closely, it has more friction for retention yet draws more smoothly, and feels more secure all around. I own 3 bk14 and one came with a sheath that was so loose that I would not have felt comfortable using without the flipper. The 2 non-edc ones are set up as neck knives. One wearing kydex is a user and the other stashed in the factory sheath with flipper as a back up. All are sporting TKC g10 scales.

I'm glad somebody knew what you were talking about, because I sure didn't. Scales on the 14 are a big help, IMO.
Love the 16... even more so after a slight modification. Why wait til Xmas?

No flippy thingie here, neck carry handle down.....but I keep mine in the box in case the sheath gets worn enough to stop retaining the knife and then I could put it back on.

Welcome to Becker land, some very nice folks on here!

Hi Snow Walker, pleasure to meet you. Pull up a chair and get comfortable. :)

Thanks for welcome...quite an active group you have here! So the response I'm hearing is take off the flippy thing as long as the sheath doesn't get too loose. Check...my sheath is still tight. I read a lot about the older, harder sheaths dulling the earlier BK14s. For you kydex users, any pics (that's someone who can't seem to figure out how to post pics asking for someone else to post pics...)? DIY kydex or purchased? Got scales for my handle already... pair of Izula scales. May have to upgrade, though, to get a thicker, longer handle...

I have the old style sheath for my 14. I just trained myself to apply pressure towards the spine a bit when sheathing and un. No issues with dulling my edge yet.
