New to the forum and first "real" knife

Just bought my first real knife and went big(not in size) with a Benchmade. After numerous trips to Cabelas and Outdoor World handling different knives I decided on a 940-1. Kinda like the 943 blade style better but the CF scales just won me over and I don't like colored aluminum as it shows wear, at least my cheapie Boken did. REALLY tried to like the Spyderco's but I just don't like the wide blade and "hole" thing, it's too bad as I live about 30 minutes from them here in Colorado and like supporting local companies big or small. So far, a week, and I love it. Thinking hard about buying a 943 and a 940-2 or 940-1501, swapping blades and selling the 940 blade with the black aluminum scales just to have a 943 with G-10 scales. Think the 940 with CMP-20CV blade and black aluminum scales would sell for a regular 940 price(technically used and probably no warranty)? Think I am bit with the knife bug which I don't need to ad to my other addictions(watches, hand guns, ham radio, muscle cars, motorcycles, and the list goes on. Well thanks for listening to me brag, lol, and thanks(or maybe not) for this forum.

Thanks for your post Joe, and welcome. Any time someone puts that much thinking to the task, and isn't a member of this Forum Should be a part of it. May your 940-1 be the foundation of, and a good start to your collection. As a real knife it more than qualifies. Cheers! ...Joe

What he said! Welcome!

Nice first score! I'm a sucker for carbon fiber too. I was eyeballing a 940-1 last year for my first BM as well, but ended up with a 484-1. Now I've stepped up and added a 908-161 to the lineup, and suddenly we have the beginnings of a collection, because at this point I'm hooked, lol. No point in trying to avoid the addiction, that 940 is a great knife, and a strong start to what I'm sure will be your collection, a year down the road you will still be loving your 940-1 and contemplating your next addition. Good choice for sure, enjoy!

You think I'm going to last a year? I doubt I'll make a week. I'm seriously torn between swapping a 943 blade into either a 940-2 or 940-1501 for every day dirty use and using the 940-1 for more civilized activity.

Welcome to the addiction! As long as you like the knife, that's what matters. I didn't care for my 940-1 as much as I thought I would. The s90v is a pain to sharpen without high-end stones (think diamond), even on my Edge Pro. The carbon fiber flexed more than I expected it would. I sold it a while back, and now I have a 940-1501, which I really, really like. It hasn't left my pocket since it arrived (and pushing a Rift out of my pocket is no easy task!), I'm actually good at sharpening -20CV/M390, and the G10 is rock solid for a handle with partial liners.

If you go the 943/940-1501 route, the black handled 940 with -20CV blade should sell easily. You can even dye the -1501 scales black if you end up not liking the blue/black 2-tone. As for warranty, you would be surprised what Benchmade will cover. A simple blade swap to a franken-knife will technically void the warranty, but unless you actually damage the knife in the process, don't be surprised if they go ahead and cover any warranty work.

Well, 940-1501 should be here Wednesday. I have a blue screw kit and a blue CF clip for it on the way too. I emailed BM asking if I could order a 940-2 with a 943 blade direct from them, or, send them a 940-2 to have the blade replaced with a 943.

Are those custom scales or different models(other then the 1501)? If they are custom, where did you get them?

Hello Joe.
Customs from a great dude here on the forum. His name is Ryan. His handle here is Death of All Things, or as we call him here DOAT.
He does beautiful work, prices are right and they will be delivered when he says they'll be delivered!!
He's done 3 sets of scales for me and he's a pleasure to deal with!
You can check out a ton of his work here Joe.

Haha, nice entry, and we'll thought out. Glad you like your new blade, but as palonej said, run while you still can ;)
Just came back to the 94x series, this time for a 943. That is, when it finally passes customs. And that 940-2 looks really interesting as well [emoji14]

Those are pretty sweet knives. Asa fellow Coloradan with some of the same addictions ... watches, knives ... guns ..... maybe there should be a support group!
