Hello! I just now this minute joined BladeForums and have started to purchase knives for myself within the last year or two. My first was an F1, then an ESEE 5 & 3, a couple of Spyderco folders, and now a few days ago, a Mora Companion HD, Mora Garberg and just yesterday a BK2 that I installed micarta handles on last evening. I’m debating about removing the finish and either polishing or patinaing the BK2. I’m a mechanic and ain’t afraid to mess around with stuff; but I’m up in the air on this one. One one hand, I want to leave it alone for ease of upkeep and such, and yet on the other hand (I can’t leave things well enough alone by nature) I want to make it my own individual knife. My wife tells me often, “Quit changing that poor old Jeep of yours...”. The BK2 looks like a good canvas to customize and learn on for sure. I’m in Southern California and I won’t be running around in the rain with it as far as rust is concerned. I try to be very pro active and take care of my stuff - but I sure like the unfinished look with a nice patina or polish. I think part of it is, once it’s under construction, there ain’t really goin back to completely stock - ha ha. Hence the hesitation. I know it’s a beginner question for all of you here, but one has to get his feet wet somewhere. Any input to further me on the knife path would be greatly appreciated. Anyway, thanks for the ear.

I love when people mod their knives and love modding mine too. Sometimes, I buy a knife brand new with a mod in mind. Unfortunately, I only have the skills and tools for the most basic stuff and have to send my knives to more capable folks for the more drastic stuff.

If you have the skills and tools to do what you are considering, I say go for it.

If it will make you happy and enjoy using your blade more, than I say have at it.

Welcome to Bladeforums !!!! The knife addiction only gets worse now lol :-)

Welcome to BFC Jdilkpkle !!!!!!!
You know, there’s some knives that when you have in your hand will stay with you forever. If the BK2 is one of those knives, then why not make it your own. But, if you think you’ll sell it later on, you may want to take into consideration the resale value if too many mods are done to it.

I say go for it. Here is the Esee 5 I did:

If it was mine, I'd take the paint off. You can always buy another one. You can have mine for a small fee if you like as I pretty much never used it as I just don't care for how it feels in my hands.

It's your money, I say go for it. But then again, I'm an artist, and like to tinker with stuff as well... :D
