Welcome to the Forums (I got to say it at last

Ok, the best online place to learn is www.balisongxtreme.com theres some really nice tutorials there, ranging from beginner to advanced, and to top it off Clay frequents these very forums, and is a nice guy to boot.

As for what makes a good knife, well theres normally great debate about that. If money is no object, go for a Benchmade Model 42 (BM-42), however several suitable cheaper knives are available. Do a forum search for Jaguar and/or Bear and I'm sure you'll find much debate about which is best. You could also check out SniperBoy's view on both these at

And yet, they will lock out any for sale items or any self promo. Something stinks!

The original poster asked a couple of reasonable questions. I don't feel the need to lock the thread for that.

Yes, our friend John has done a little shameless self-promotion. But, y'all seem to have given him an adequate ribbing for it. John makes a lot of good contributions here and I'm not opposed to dealers to do make good contributions doing a SMALL amount of self-promotion when the topic does come up (though ethics demands that when you endorse your own business, you make clear that it is your own business). The risk, of couse, is that of shilling. But, John's never done anything like that. And I think that he realizes that it's a stupid thing to do since it always backfires.

Anyway, right now, I don't see any reason to lock this thread. Our new friend Mr. Machine has asked some interesting questions. Let's see if anyone wants to offer him some answers.

Balisongxtreme.com has already been mentioned and is great. There are some good training videos too. You can see some reviews of them both on balisongxtreme and on my site.

Right now, Jaguar makes a nice knife if you don't mind replacing the pins. The Benchmade Model 42 is the gold standard in the industry right now and darn nice.

As for training on the "use" of the balisong, well, what kind of training and what kind of use do you have in mind?

I agree with Gollnick on every point. You can usually pick up Jaguars around $20-$25. And you will have to replace the pins. There is a good method listed at www.balisongxtreme.com for replacing the pins with nails. But, if you're want to invest a little $, like everyone said, the Benchmade 42. Have fun and welcome!
