Just wanted to say hello. I am not new to the forums but just new here. I frequent Practical Tactical, Balisong and the others. I train uner Bish Sensei at Reddragonjujitsu.com and I am in the process of training for my blue belt. At this level I am required to begin Kenjitsu and just got my Boken today and have been looking at the Pratical Katana. Just wanted to check in.

Welcome aboard. You will find this section less well utilized then some other sections but it does have its moments.

Aloha

I am, also, new to this forum. I am new to swords, and hope to be better educated by listening here to those who are not new to this weapon. My interest, at this time, is in a fast, easy to re-direct, cutting weapon with thrusting abilities. I have been quite interested in a Katana type/style weapon, without a tanto point but a bellied blade and regular tip. I have been thinking(always dangerous for me)a blade length of 22"-24", and hopefully still retain the ability to snap cut. A high quality steel like Starret 01, or D2, and a comfortable handle that will allow shifting of the grip without wearing holes in my hands. These are some of my ideas, but as stated, what do I know? I'm here to learn. I would like a robust weapon that would lend itself to hard training with out damaging itself. Thank you for any advice or instruction you might send my way.

to the Sword Forum. I pop in and outta here. Been studying asian and european sword arts for a while. Did Goshin Jutsu (sai, Kama, nunchaku, shuriken, chain&rope weapons), Aikibudo-Kobudo with bokken for Daisho and Tanto, then Historic Armed Combat for 5 years with a dozen different weapon combos (Spear, Pole arm, Great Sword, Dagger, two weapon, axe, mace, weapon&shield). Due to the full force contact, we had to use/make/buy 12-14ga. steel armor or steel reinforced leather.

So, you're most likely among friends.

Friends with a low sense of humor, perhaps, but friends just the same.

D2 is a particularly bad choice for a sword steel. It is far too brittle at any decent hardness. O1 is suitable for a differentially hardened single edge blade but probably not for a double edge sword.
