Hi all. I arrived here via www.equipped.com I was updating the first aid/emergency/repair kits my family brings camping and backpacking and started reading about knives over there. Next thing you know I was researching 4-6" general purpose fixed blades, which brought me to Fallkniven and these forums.

I plan to buy an F1 in the very near future (I also considered the Moran Featherweight and Drop Point, the Marbles Sport 99 and the Cold Steel Master Hunter but after reading as much as I could find here and elsewhere, I decided on the Fallkniven). Where should I buy? (I'm particularly interested in online shops).

Also on my wish list are a Cold Steel shovel (a really cool thing for the trunk of my car, if nothing else) and a better lock-blade knife. I have a Victorinox Outrider that I carry backpacking and an old Buck 422 in my desk drawer, but I'd still like to buy the best general purpose (opening boxes, making fires, cutting twine and rope, spreading peanut butter, etc. etc.) folder I can get for under $75. I just missed out on the discontinued Spyderco Calypso on Ebay. The bids were at $65 when I last looked. That's the top knife on my list (I'd rather buy a Glock than a Sebenza ;) ) but your opinions on sub-$75 folders are welcome.

In sum: Where's the best price to buy a Fallkniven F1 and a sub-$75 folder, and which folder shoul I buy. Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to Bladeforums, diletante!

Where can you shop online? There's a lot of great sites. 1SKS supports Bladeforums, has given me good service, and is generally competitive on price. I also like Bayou Lafourche.

Under $75 you might consider the very popular Spyderco Native. Check out the Cold Steel Voyagers, too. And the Benchmade Griptilian.

He's got the Fällkniven F1 from $66 to $80 depending on the sheath.

I suggest you try a plain edge at first. Later on you might have a specific use for a serrated blade, maybe a small back-up, for fibrous materials. But plain edges are better for general purpose work.
