G'day guys, My name's Rob and I'm from Australia, I thought I'd make a thread to introduce myself.

I got my first knife at the age of 8 (a victorinox climber) which I still carry today at the age of 18. Ever since I got my first knife I have been fascinated by knives and I have a small collection.

Most of my knives are pretty cheap as most of them were bought when I didn't have a job, therefore a very small budget. One thing I have come to realize, some cheap knives aren't total pieces of crap, in fact, I have several cheap knives that I have had for several years and still serve me well.

Now that I am gainfully employed, I hope to start buying some better quality knives such as Spydercos.

Here are a couple of knives that arrived today in the mail.

I only paid for the large one, but the small one came as a free gift. I bought them from a company called Forsyth. I have been buying from them for a while now. They are located in Tasmania, Australia. I have always been happy with the quality of the knives (even though they are very cheap) and the service.

I hope I haven't made a complete fool of myself for posting pictures of, and talking about cheap knives.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards, Rob.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Rob. Not a fool at all. We like all kinds of knives. Especially ones we haven't seen before. I'm not familiar w/ Forsyth knives, but I live in Forsyth county.

You're right, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good knife. Those are nice looking knives, btw. I googled them and found a ebay listing saying they were stainless steel, do you know anything more about what type of steel they use?

Also there are a lot of fans of Victorinox here. Great knives.

Welcome.

There are a lot of good folks here on BF with a wealth of knowledge to share.

BTW: Cheap doesn't mean bad. There many good knives out there that don't cost a lot of money. Mora and Opinel are a couple brands that come to mind. I'm sure that there are many more.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what kind of steel they use, all I know is they keep a good edge and are easy to sharpen. But I'm guessing because they're so cheap the steel isn't anything fancy. I think on one of his old listings it said 440c. Sorry I couldn't be more help, and thanks for your warm welcome.

Greetings Rob!
Welcome to BF! There is nothing foolish about your knives, nor your post.

What part of aus you from Rob?
ive seen plenty of forsyth stuff on ebay. however i reckon once you grab a spyderco you'll never go back.
any idea which one you're going for?

Hey FTO, I'm from Melbourne, Victoria.

I'm not too sure which spyderco I'll go for first, as I hope to buy many :D
I'll do a bit of reading up on them on these forums and hopefully that will help me make a decision. It's hard to choose when there are so many.

That looks like a beautiful knife, but a little out of my price range, I was thinking for my first spyderco I'd spend $50-$100

Hi Rob!
Never worry about getting a knife that costs small money. If it works for you, then it's a good knife. If it doesn't work for you, then you got a poor knife, and that's regardless of the price you pay!

This is the place where any and all who have an interest in knives can get together to share information. Some folks even have correct information. :)
Enjoy your hobby and don't worry about money. You're just going to spend it in the end anyway.

Melbourne! best city in the world....in many respects.

may i remind american users that unless we order online and import, which can occasionaly be a pain in the butt im told, then spyderco pricing here is through the roof!
see:
http://www.globalgear.com.au/prod650.htm

so unless you can import, the best value spyderco ive found in a store is the tenacious found for around $80-$90

That's makes sense. As you guys are upside down under, I'm amazed everything doesn't go through the roof just because of gravity! :p

When you do a currency conversion of US dollars to Australian dollars, how much more do things cost (without shipping costs) for you to purchase ordering IN Oz? (Did that sentence make any sense?)

In other words, are you really spending more (without shipping, of course) that people in the US? I don't live in the US either, and sometime shipping costs me more than the item I've ordered. But just as often the price of the item here is twice what I'd pay if I purchased it in the US.
(I'm still not sure I'm saying what I'm trying to ask... :o And English is supposed to be my first language! )

probably wouldnt work out on something like the tenacious, but if they are charging $300 for a $100 knife theres no way shipping would be anywhere close to $200.
AU dollar and US dollar are actually pretty close these days
