I'm looking for something not too pricey to add to my standard kit. I'd like to replace my axe with something more "throwable", hammer back not a spike and can be used for felling and shaping small timber. So basicly a workhorse. Made in the States would be a plus. Hoping some of that made sense. Thank you for your time.

The cold steel pipe hawk is a good bet but it's not made in the US. Has a hammer poll and a decent width blade for cutting. Cost is around $30.00.

Regards

Robin

The CS seem about right for what I'm looking to do, and very inexpensive to boot.

RMJ Forge,,,,,,,and always worth the wait.

My buddy has one that may still have my drool on it. But I'm not looking to drop that much, just yet. :)

Thank you very much.

Cold creek forge can make exactly what you want.

That's alot of great suggestions. I thank you all. I'll try to remember to post some pics when I buy one.

Look up Kentucky, here on the forum. He sells great looking hawks here all the time. The last two were less than $80 each. Those from Cold Creek forge look awesome as well.

I have a few hawks:
CS Trail, CS Trench, CS Spike, 2 Hawks Forge, SOG Fusion, and a Coal Creek Forge. I have used my CCF the most, the 2 hawks next, SOG third, and the others barely. In fact the Spike and Trail are disassembled to be modded when I find the time and what I want to do. I love the weight of the CCF, had Horn Dog put an excellent edge on it, and it will chop. The 2 Hawks is ok with the edge that it came with but I messed it up tring to get a hair popping edge--needless to say I will be sending it to Horn Dog too. After I get the 2 Hawks back I will do a comparison. The 2 Hawks is definetly lighter, more of a thrower I think but should work for a light hawk. The others, well I have them but they are not as impressive. Did I mention the Coal Creek Forge is made from a jackhammer bit!
Here is a pick. Since getting it then I fit the head further up the shaft. Eventually it will get another handle, wrapped and maybe some carving.

Thats a very nice hawk. I've been thinking of something close to that. But with another edge on the lower side. I haven't been able to fine a site for CCF. I'm assuming they don't have one?

CCF doesn't have a site, you have to email him (he's a member here).

Most makers will sharpen the beard if you want it.

A year or so ago I tried sending a message to H&B forge a couple times but never received a reply. I had a couple questions about one of their hawks that I was interested in and didn't feel comfortable about just sending payment and an order. I had read a number of positive opinions about their products and since they're in my home state... I've wondered ever since if it was just bad luck or if the website was prepaid for a long term and they're gone.
