Always been kind of in love with blades since I was little, much to my parents chagrin.

First things first, I just bought a set of norton wet stones in 220, 1000 and 4000 along with the steelex holders for each. I'll get the 8K stone later. Have always sharpened my knives by hand for the most part with steels, diamond steels and handheld stones and diamond flats, have achieved a decent edge thus far, what i think was decent. ;) Had a Lansky stone kit for a while but lost it in a move, that was a nice way to achieve a nice edge on smaller knives. Can't wait to start to learn the old school stones. :D

Very good with my hands, always have been. Know metallurgy a bit, made my own chisels, pin and center punches in my machinist training. Loved doing that.

Have a budding knife collection including a Teton Bowie I bought close to 20 years ago now. Still wicked sharp and I've put it through moderate hell. Just recently found out it's a somewhat rare piece. I just purchased a Laredo Bowie and I have a couple more fixed and a few folders.

Thinking about making my own knives in the future, bought a couple trash winchester bowies on amazon and am going to try my hand a handle making first on those. Not too pleased with my Laredo's handle being cracked from day one, but it is what it is. Saw the thread about the cable system, not worried about that. Love the knife and will be getting it re-handled by a professional in the next few months.

Learning tons here, what a great forum. Been lurking and reading here for about a month now, the knowledge base here is off the charts. I could sit and read all day.

teton, if you ever need any help or have any questions on sharpening or making knives, feel free to send me an email.
i had a member send me a laredo bowie that he wanted re handled but with a loveless styled handle. since he was a member of the armed services, i machined him all the parts to redo the handle free of charge. if you would like to see pictures of all the parts i made, send me an email and i'll be glad to send you some pictures. my email addy is posted on my website.

Thank you for the offer Richard. I will surely be contacting you in the future when the time comes.

Just reading all I can here to learn the craft. I am going to focus on getting comfortable with the sharpening stones first. The rest will come with time. Been watching the vids on youtube and reading all of Knifenuts info on sharpening.

Hi Teton, welcome to the forums. You are absolutely right, this place is a wealth of knowledge. Most of us have no financial interest in this knife/sharpening hobby and just want to help. We do this on our free time, devoting hours for the sake of furthering the art. Knifenut is a master, and you are indeed wise to watch his videos. Every motion of his hands and every word he says has real value for sharpeners at all levels. I've watched all of his vids, and I have watched some of them countless times on this journey to improve my own sharpening.

How do you like the Norton stones (those are the water stones, right?)? I envy you for having a base for each stone. I need to get a separate one at least for oil stones as they are a mess to clean up if I need to switch to water stones! :D

Hi Mag, thank you for the welcome.

Yes sir, they are waterstones. I do not have the stones in my possesion yet. They should arrive by mid-week. Killin me after all the reading and watching vids on sharpening all weekend to not have them yet. TBH, I probably didn't need 3 holders, oh well. Better to have them then not.

After watching Knifenuts vids i noticed he leaves his stones loose on the holders and allows them to rock a bit in the fixture, I am wondering if this helps the stone follow the bevel once found on his technique??

Hoping to have this as a fun hobby once I retire from the rat race. Got roughly 15 years before that happens.....I love working with metal and wood, this just seems like a no brainer. Believe me, I do not take this for granted, I know there's a huge learning curve on everything to do with this hobby/career. Patience is a virtue.

Welcome to the forum!

Mag himself has collected many good advices and sharing them here .. plus started a thread that now becomes sticky in this part of the forum. ;)

Hi Chris, thanks for the welcome!

Reading Mag's stuff, and Richards and Knifenuts, and watching all the vids I can on youtube to glean as much info as I can get into my limited grey matter. Starting to hear that waterstone/knife sound in my sleep. ;)

No, it's a great idea! :D In fact, I might order a separate base for my main stones. It's a pain cleaning them off between stones. If I had a base for each stone, I'd never clean those bases. They would be permanently caked with whatever slurry the stone produces, and I'd only clean them when it got caked on so thick the stone didn't sit secure in the base anymore. Or I might "harvest" the slurry for stropping or experimenting.

That's a great idea, harvesting each slurry and keeping it for later experiments. Glad i got one for each.

The holders are 16.95 at Amazon, with prime two day shipping is free. Got my 4k stone from them.

Got my 4k today. Feels rougher than i thought it would. Going to start trying it out tonight after work. :)

After much reading and watching vids, i may have jumped the gun on the norton stones. Making another list of stones to get soon.

Arashiyama - 1k and 6k
Naniwa 2k big green brick of joy
Nubatama 4k Bamboo

Need an 8k stone, haven't figured out which one yet.....

Well, had some fun with the stone for a bit tonight. It's not flat and I don't have my flattener yet, but I gave it a go after soaking it a bit on an old chicago cutlery 6" chef knife anyway.

Holy smokes it's tough to hold that edge angle. I keep rockin my wrist a bit. Diggin in the tip too, many gouges on the stone to verify that. I can see how chasing that edge is addicting. I think I was pressing too hard too.

It's sharper than it was when i started. I guess that's a good thing..... Scratch pattern looks pretty good, only have a 10x loupe though.

Itchin to get my other two stones on Friday.
