Like it says, I'm pretty new to knives, but I'm falling fast in love with them. I just ordered a Spyderco Manix 2 g10. Haven't received it yet. I really want a SOG tanto Vulcan. The full size version. I mean, what a beautiful knife, right? I was doing a bit of reading before I dropped the cash. I read several negative reviews/ comments from variou places. Obviously, there were good reviews as well. Just wanted to get your guys opinions on the knife. Pros/ Cons, whatever. I considered the mini vulcan, but I really want a stud of a blade. I want a bigger knife for all purpose use. Also, any suggestions on other knives would be appreciated.

Hello, welcome to the wonderful world of knives. I've been involved with knives for a long time and occasionally I run across a knife that stands out from all the others.

The new SOG Kiku folder, (KU 1012) has to be one of the most beautiful, well made knives I have ever seen. It's silky smooth and a very well made knife.

The smaller size would be perfect for every day carry too.

Good luck and welcome to BladeForums.

I am smitten by the Vulcan. One of just a couple knives which I have in duplicate. My only gripe with it is weight, and ....well...it's a bit sinister looking, LOL. I think I will attempt some mods myself when I get round to it. For sure, I will be drilling out the liners, and I think I may entertain dressing down the spine. If you get one in ti-ni black, all of the flash-pizazz is subdued, which can be easier for you in a NKP environ.

You will find the ARC lock very close to the excellent Manix. Extremely easy to close, as well as confidence-inspiring when opened. It opens by taking tension off of the lock, or with a flick of the flipper, or a punch to the stud, quite versatile. It can also be opened as close to 'silently' as you can expect from a knife. I was worried about the recurved edge, but...set the Sharpmaker at 40 degrees, and it's just MADE for this knife!

I bent my clip somehow, without realizing it. How so convenient it is to remove just ONE screw, bend it back to a suitable angle, and screw it back into place. Good to go.

There is a Russian U-Tube out there showing the edge digging into the backspacer upon closing, and my large shows signs of that also. It will be another area I dress down when I get into the frame of mind for the mod/s.

I'm a big fan of the older SOG fixed blades ....

I just picked up one of these a couple of weeks ago ..... a rare Recondo:

And one of these last July .... the Super Bowie:

And even earlier this year ..... the Scuba Demo:

And here is what I think is easily the best-looking SOG made, the Recon Bowie:
