: Just wanted to say I am knife nut, and wondering what the
real advantages of this website are, and who are good people
to buy things from.

All of those companies make very good knives. What are you planning to do with the knife, about how big should it be, and how much are you willing to spend? If you can give some parameters, you'll get a ton of answers.

Rising Storm,

First, welcome to BFC. I hope you find the place warm and friendly. Just ignore the crazies...er...more "colorful" members. :)

Your question may be a little to general to answer effectively. What is your definition of "everyday use?" Any of the companies you listed will fit the bill handsomely but there may be some models that'll be more suitable than others.

Welcome to bladeforums. One of the advantages of this sight is that there is so much info here. I haven't bought a knife mag since I joined. I know everything 3 months in advance now :-) And people here have lots of experience. Check out the good bad and ugly forum in the knife exchange area for info on who to buy from. Look forward to reading your posts!

Sorry about that, I actually own several knives, went to the
bathroom, and my little brother got a hold of it, a he's the one
wanting to buy a knife, I will beat him severly later.

Welcome to the forums, Rising Storm. I'm one of those who are easily confused, so your edited 1st post and the next few posts made me think I'd stepped into the wrong zone of some sort. (Actually wondered just what Schmackey was smoking)

The advantages of the forums. Do you mean compared to other forums? Do you mean compared to life without forums?

I'm disabled and frequently housebound, so the forums have become the major focus of my life since I discovered them. I'm also gabby -- maybe even garrulous -- curious, fairly strongly opinionated and you can see why I have so many posts in my short time here. (I also try to do what I can to make newbies feel welcome.) For me to lose the forums would be awful. The quality of my life would deteriorate seriously.

This forum has the largest number of truly knowledgeable people regularly posting. Instead of an "auction" used by a couple guys a month, this forum has sales forums. Many good bargains are to be had here. Of course, somewhere along with discovering all those good buys and learning more and more about knives, buying them can easily become an addiction. I almost never go to the sales forums any more. Just can't stop buying when I do. (This isn't a disadvantage, mind you.)

Somebody else already answered your other question. Be sure to use the search function in G,B,&U. And elsewhere. Tend to expect that many or most of your initial questions may well have been asked and answered as many as a couple dozen times. Also, since you sound reasonably young, questioning is a better bet than sharing your opinions, at least during the early stages of your participation here.

Keep coming, read a lot, and enjoy yourself!

I think the real advantages of this site include a large collection of people with similar interest. This allows you as a part of that group to learn from other's experience. Learning from others is painless way to learn a lot of life's leasons. This site also alows you to learn where other "knife nuts" buy knives from and learn where they have had bad experiences at.

Personaly I have used Discount Knives, Skyland's Cutlery, and more recently just cut a deal with Cumberland knives. My experiences with all of the above has been great.

I for one would be glad to have you stop by the site and look around awhile. www.CumberlandKnives.com

Charles, Your knife is anxiously awaiting its new home. I caught it trying to sneak out the door this morning and had to restrain it. Lucky I had gloves on !

Possibly the best advantage of being on Bladeforums is the satisfaction that however much one has foolishly spent on a crazy impulse some other knife knut would probably have spent more... at least that's what I tell the wife ;)
