Hello,

I have decided to buy myself a nice poket knife and quickly became overwhelmed by the options. The knife I saw that get me started on this hunt is a Kershaw leek in orange, I almost picked it up at an outdoor store but decided to check out a local cutlery shop to see my options. While there I was drawen to a benchmade 470-1 but was not sure I wanted to shell out the money for it before I did some shopping. I did some research here and on a few other sites and it seems while the 470 is a nice knife it may be a bit overpriced for what you get. From my research I found a few other options, the spiderco sage series and the benchmark 707.

I was hoping for some advice on what a good first poket knife would be for someone with no experience with knives other the kitchen knives. I would like it to be on the smaller side probably around a 3" blade is just about right and would be looking to spend no more then 200. I would like the knife to look nice and that will be a big factor although I realize aesthetics are a personal preference.

From my shopping and research I like the look of the benchmade 470 the best but all of the ones I mentioned I could like with. Probably the Sage 2 and leek would be my next best options aestheticly.

Use wise I will be carrying it every day so simply general day to day use is all I need. I don't want to spend more then I should and get a knife that's out of my league and I don't want to not spend enough to where I want to upgrade in a few months.

Anyways any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for any odd grammar I posted this from my phone.

Thanks

Benchmades always to me seem overpriced, but they are made in America. I have the Sage 1 and it is an excellent edc. I forget about it in my pocket and the blade profile is great for food prep (wider blade) and tough enough (strong tip) for hard use edc tasks. My knife came a little stiff but broke in (blade flys out smoothly with no wrist flick), I think this is because of the non polished blade. All in all this is as tough of a knife as you need for a 3 inch blade and is a hell of a slicer to boot. The Sage 2 should only be better. Enjoy your search! Oh and Welcome to the Forum! :applouse:

I'd get a Benchmade, I feel that Spydercos are just overhyped these days

I second the sage 1, great little user that can be had for under 100.00.

How many spydies do you have?

The sage 1 is an excellent knife one that i cant recommend enough.

Had a Tenacious and a Vallotton and have held all sorts of others including PMs and such
The Vallotton was beautiful but impractical

I just went through a dozen sub 100 dollar edc's in three months...I was neurotic about it.

Best of the best is the mini grip, skyline, persistence, crkt drifter, ukpk, Rat 2 everything else is too thick, too expensive, too small, too fragile,.IMHO...

I might be hating though if I could rationalize carrying a 300 dollar knife it would be a small sebenza...I just can't rationalize it...

My feelings are actually the complete opposite. I'm starting a small Spyderco collection, and I have no desire to ever purchase another Benchmade.

I definitely don't think you can make blanket statements about Benchmade or Spyderco. To iconic companies with knives in all types of price ranges Spyderco more so than Benchmade. Is there another lock mechanism more buttery smooth than Benchmade axis lock. Is there a more pragmatic or ergonomic design then Spyderco. that said I really like the Ontario rat 2.

Always my first two recommendations for people's first decent pocket knives are the Spyderco Delicas or Benchmade Mini Griptillians. These are great bang for the buck utility folders that will either be the start of a collection or make great backups if you ever upgrade. Additionally you can add custom scales to make them your own. I have some high end stuff but these are still part of my daily carry and I've often given them as gifts to great appreciation to first time users. They are just the right size for a first knife and come with good blade steel and decent ergos. I'd consider the Sage 2 a classic upgrade.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses and ideas. I am going to go the the shop tomorrow to check out a few of the options. I'm not sure what all they have in stock, I know they have a sage 2, sage 3, a few delicas. I want to hold a few to see what I think, hopefully they have a few of the other suggestions you all gave that I can look at.

Again thanks for the info and ideas.

I ended up picking up a sage 3, it came down to that or the Benchmade 470. While I liked the overall size of the 470 I decided the sage would be a more versatile option.

Thanks again everyone for the information.

Great choice on the Sage. If you are anything like most of us on here, you'll end up getting a few more Spydies & BM's!
