never threw a knife in my life. i was wondering if someone could go to ebay.com.au for me and have a quick look at the throwing knives there (all 2 or 3 for around $25), and reccomend any. are there any techniques for throwing? could i find these knives in kmart or somewhere cheaper? also, what could i use as a target? what sorta wood should i use to make one?

thanks,
-Luke

well i wouldnt recomend any of the knifes they sell there... not becose they are bad knifes (even thou i would say they probebly are) but becose you first need to figure out what style of throwing want to be doing.

diferent styles need diferent knifes. however the knife isnt a that big deal as it is posible to use anything with a pointy end. i would recomend you to go to youtube and look at some knifethrowing films and se if you find a style you like then see what kinds of knifes they use and get somthing close to that.

when it comes to targets you can use basicly anything that the knife can stick in. but to get the best reult you want some softer wood (not like playwood) and mind the grais in the wood as it will be alot harder to get the knifes to stick if you dont hit along the grians.

when it comes to kmart i have no idea as i live in sweden and we dont have kmart here -_-

You might try pine 2x4's as your target material. A tree round is better but harder to come up with. (try local tree trimmers)

Cheap knives are just that - cheap knives. You should be able to get some of the less expensive cold steel throwers reasonably. The shorter 8" knives are not as easy to throw. The longer 12"+ seem to easier to learn on.

good luck -its fun!!

The cold steel true flight throwers seem to work ok for me. I prefer the shovel for throwing though. I find it super easy to toss.

i got 3 sure flight cold steel throws off ebay for cheap and they work great. I use cardboard which gets chewed up pretty quickly but takes the impact of off handed throws which dont quite stick and doesn't make them bounce back at you which harder woods will do. I have bought some other throwing knives in the past which I could never really get to work for me, 4-5 inch hibian types which just wouldn't stick probally cuz of the weight or length (which makes them spin too quickly). Before I threw my first throw I read up a lot about it and couldn't seem to get them to stick but after I had relaxed and adjusted my distance (probally the thing that made the most difference) they all started to stick in which was awesome. Don't give up and change your distance to find the correct distance. Good luck and report back.

I generally looked at this website http://www.knifethrowing.info/how_to_throw_knives.html but relaxed and stopped thinking so much about it which really got it to work. Most important thing is repeatablility. Then all you gotta do is to adjust the distant to get it to stick right. It's some what like golf. As soon as you got your swing down, all you gotta do is change the club to change the distance.

I also watched this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhEzY_QzyhA and that guys associated movies on knife throwing. Just get a few good knifes (I highly suggest cold steel but that's just me) and get out there are start throwing them. Seriously, its gonna be super fustrating at first cuz they probally won't stick but once they do, there isnt anything more satisfying!

Last thing, you dont need a sharp edge to the knife, you just need a pointy point on it.

P.S. You probally wont find good throwing knifes in any retail store. Buy it off ebay or other internet store which will probally be a whole lot cheaper and more convinent for you. Good luck.
