so i jsut got a nice almost new roll in saw bandsaw and its the "stuff"
dsc02406sm.jpg

it makes cutting into big bars of steel a snap and that saves mill bits (with my crappy mill ever little thing helps)

milling the back of the guard

and some pictures of the blanks as i keep prepping it for HT. i have a platen in a radius of 4 foot on the way from Nate so its getting a really shallow hollow grind with full distal taper (i may later decide to give it a double hollow grind tho we will see)

Very informative, Butch, but what I like especially is the fact that
the demonstration is very well presented photographically!!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Love this blade shape. Any chance of making one with a full Convex Zero Grind? Reminds me of some of the 'older' Marbles or even older western style 'bowie' blades which have always been a favorite of mine.:thumbup:

the blade shape was from one of grams butchering knives (and the nice little pocket knives )
i had not ground a small at the recosso and wide near the tip blade in a while so i wanted to keep the skills up (and its a change fromm razors and kitchen knives )
the blade is 5and 3/4 long

im still a bit up in the air about the handle as i have some bone but think i might just go with burl wood

and for those that are wandering the saw is gravity feed and the cut is way better then a 4x6 or 7x14 chopping bandsaw (+ i can make over 9 inch depth cuts )

chris i had found out the hard way that the cuts that i had made before made the bar more tuning fork then nice stable block (the spring action knocked a tooth off the blade )

any one that has worked with bimetal or carbide tip blades know that once you bust one tooth you will 99% of the time knock 6-10 teeth of right quick

this helped save me and i then had to watch every cut and lighten the cut over the damaged teeth

the update of the day is
i dropped of my LN2 tank to be filled and hand sanded the little notch by the guard so i can clean it up easy after HT
the other thing was i cleaned up and rounded the corners on the tang side
short of the LN2 i think im ready for HT (will be thru or fri)

Very cool saw Butch!

What's the drill bit for? Where the bars uneven or something?

Bandsaw-with-drill-bit.jpg

He's not sawing three bars out at once, he's sawing the excess off of one integral... so the drill supports the gap created by the prior cut. :)

Look'n good Butch! :)

now that i have had the chance to see how things are going i may change the order of cuts. this is after all a style that is far from my normal (tho im having fun making it )

i think i found the African black wood block too as the more i thought about it im going to just go with clean and classy (or at least try like hell to be classy)

blade is now hardened and cryo treated
the first temper is done and in the morning the 2nd temper will happen then back to the grinder

i am a bit behind on this so i had to skip a few of the working with the tools pictures (had to drive to fancy wood store to get the ebony i needed )

front of "guard"

ruffing out the handle with a tapered pin in to hold every thing together

ok so some of the hand sanding is done (320 grit) and the handle is 99% shaped out (still have not epoxied the handle or set the pin)

next up putting on my makers mark and then finish hand sanding to 600 or 1500 (not sure where i want to stop)

also will be chamfering the handle and guard joint ever so slightly

The machinist in me swears that those teeth are for aluminum or brass. You should have about 20-24 tpi for that steel?

The collector in me is highly impressed at the knife, no matter what. :)

Coop

good eye the 6 TPI bimetal was not the greatest (tho for the cuttign of the 1.75 thick worked well)
i have a 10-14 vary-tooth and a 24 tpi for cutting thinner stock. most the time i am cutting 3/32 cpm154
i was running 70 sfpm (and yes i know im a ham fisted monkey when it comes to real tool room work )

well here are a few of the pics not i got to see if Mr Long is still doing leather
i think this came out well but as always i want any and all feedback
edit to add specs the knife is D2 and ebony
the blade is 6 inch long and the over all is 11.25

Watching the transformation from a rough sawn hunk of metal to a finished knife...it's amazing what attention to detail and patience will do.

I really don't know if I have the patience it takes to make the difference, but one of these days I'm going to try and find out.

Really nice work.
