edit to add:
despite what i said previously, i ended up sharpening a couple of my Busses that needed it (by that i mean could have used a little touch up). didn't do too bad. they're sharper than i could ever get them previously and now and shave at a light touch. the HR tip was already rounded from a lot of throwing and sharpening, but i did both of the tips by hand to avoid rounding them out even more.
used the good lee valley belts on these. 20 micron, 9, and then took it to some 2500 grit sandpaper by hand, stopped with green stuff, then back to the sander with a leather belt.

Excellent little toys and great for convex edges. Be careful though if you haven't used one before. They take metal off surprisingly quickly and it's very easy to take the point off your knife - ask me how I know

That's cool!

I just ordered a Grizzly 1 x 42. It's gonna be fun when it gets here. :D

Good times. I got a kalamazoo for Christmas and it is the BEST STROP EVER!! Among other things. ;)

How do you know?

:D :p

I got the same setup, including some belts from Leevalley. I can't say I like the POS sander at all, but I was able to put a decent edge on a machete and a few crappy kitchen knives. I think I will stick to hand sharpening my good knives.

Fortunately I didn't do it to a Busse! Agreed about the sanding disk; it's too small so there's too much speed difference across it.

I'll happily use it next time I want to convex a Busse though - my NMSFNO is likely to be the first candidate when I get around to it. I've done it using a powerfile with a 1/2" belt before and that worked OK. Much quicker than doing it by hand, even allowing for it not getting too warm.

I wish Lee Valley would ship USPS to the UK; I really want a few of their finer belts and a leather belt. They'll only use a courier though and it's way too expensive. More than the cost of the belts!

Sanding disc? Maybe you have a different model, mine has no disc. I was referring to the overall quality and usefulness of the belt sander. (which is too fast as well)

I just picked up a similar set-up and have yet to play with it. Let's trade notes on how it goes.

on edges, USE LIGHT PRESSURE and dip in water frequently to avoid messing up the heat treat. Also move your body not your arms (keep arms locked) when moving the blade across the sanding belt, that gives more control.

I have a 2"x42" and it's the most fun you can have w/o a girl! all kindsa mods are possible!

Great little sander, I have one that's very similar. I've stripped the plate, platen, clear cover and side panel off mine. Looks pretty brutal but I can change belts fast and clean it fast to.

I would suggest if you don't have a rubbish knife you should buy one and practice on it before you try a Busse. Enjoy mate.

Congrats and have fun. I got a Delta 1x42 and making my own knives right now. 2 of them needs heat treat, handles, and final sharpening and I need to start shaping another one. What kind of belts are you ordering?

well, practiced sharpening a couple of cheapo knives, and the edges didn't turn out too bad (for a first try), but i killed the tips. 'twas inevitable though. i normally end up rounding them out a tiny bit when sharpening by hand. the problem i was having was that i wasn't getting all the way down the the edge near the tip and increasing the angle until i did was when i lost the tip. guess i should just wait to do that part until i get to higher grits. i was using a cheap 120 grit belt though (got a bunch for practicing).

after that i went down to 80 and took the rear talon hole off some ASHs: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=616255

i used one of the higher grit lee valley belts for polishing up that area, and noticed that the thinner belts twisted a lot and very easily. guess it wouldn't matter for the edge much though as it would keep it level.

like Rat Finkenstein, i'll be sticking to hand sharpening my Busses for now, except for the strop since i got a leather belt.

Very nice. Can you get a belt for those that will buff out scratches?
