Just got this earlier today. I have been wanting to get one since first seeing one a few years ago but never did it. I wish Ernie did them all this way.

If I had my ruthers there would at least be a nested liner like the Hinderer on the G10 side or a full liner and the lock relief would not be so thin (taken down from .125 all the way to .040 in case you are wondering) but otherwise its the best factory Waving Emerson I think I've tried to date. All I can figure is that the thinness of the lock relief must be for easier opening.

I can't recall having an Emerson that actually worked as well as a Spyderco until today when this one arrived. Here I am carrying a chisel grind! Go figure. I don't even like chisel grinds!

I'm finding myself wondering if the A blade will slap right into here though. Anyone tried it?

Hey Steve,
How ya doin'? Do you like the cqc-7hd better than that new snody hk axis lock folder you bought? Just curious because I've been looking to purchase one of these knives.
Thanks,
Chris

I like the way it Waves. In that regard its the best Emerson I've owned and actually keeps up with the best Spydercos there. I do think that is pretty great. Its also the smoothest feeling and working new out of the box EKI I've bought to date and I've bought quite a few. Heck if they were all like this frame lock I'd be one of Ernie's biggest supporters.

I don't much care for the tanto blade but yes I do like it better overall than the HK I got. Believe it or not my son liked that HK so much I gave it to him. One thing I did find that from time was that I didn't much care for how far out the axis lock buttons stuck compared to my 14200 model.

Thanks Steve,
I also think the axis lock sticks out too far on some models, like my 420. I've thought about taking off the g-10 inserts on the 420, rounding off the sharp edges on the aluminum handle, and then grinding down the axis lock buttons to make them more flush. The 420 would be much flatter and, thus, more pocket friendly w/out those g-10 overlays.

I'm glad your son got the hunterkiller knife. Let me know if he has any issues w/ it. I'm still considering it.
And, I'm still waiting to buy an Emerson. Gotta pick the right model...

STR,
Glad you're happy with the HD=7. The HD replaced my CQC-7. I did not think that was possible! I agree, Ernie should have jumped sooner but we got ours! Keep give'n good advice on the forum.

Good question on the A blade. I don't know -- I hesitate to think so, only because of the secondary detent issue. (The hole detent on the regular CQC's is cut for the presentation-side liner; I think the HD-7 uses the "normal" detent setup).

I know the backspacer is completely drop-in interchangeable with the regular 7's backspacer.

I can fix that detent problem in about the time it takes to get the blade out. Problem is none of the A blades I've seen are Waved from the factory.

I like this knife a lot but it has a typical problem I've seen far too often with EKI products. I am at a loss to figure out how the screw keeps loosening on its own on these folders when Ernie incorporates that flat side on the pivot to help lock it in place. Yet several of my own folders from them repeatedly show this trait where I can mark where I've tightened the screw to and later note blade play again and that it has unspun itself loose again. Go figure. I hate using loctite but apparently its a necessary item on these for most of my own.

A bit off topic, but how difficult is a framelock conversion on the standard CQC 7?

I have not done one personally but based on past models I've done it should be possible. Its kind of surprising that I haven't been asked to do one of them but it may be because he HD7 is available.

Honestly of all the conversions I do I see the Emersons as the hardest though and will be glad when they are available from the factory that way. I actually don't enjoy working with that massively thick titanium as much as the thinner stock.

STR,
Wrap the pivot screw with teflon tape. Let me know if that works for you.

I have a very odd question, my buck 880 is a tanto also and the tip is un-sharpened. i have some how chipped the tip of the hd-7 in like 3 places could you grind the tanto tip down so it is not sharp, (less likely to chip, i think?) Thanks

Probably but its typical of the chisel grind. You can take the sharpmaker to it and probably take the edge down some to make it more obtuse.

But if you want me to do it I am sure I can come up with something.

If i send it to you with the other knives could you do it for me? also i got a used mini commander can i send that also for you to sharpen it. im not going to try to get an edge on a chisel grind. :( im thinking of sending them to tom to have them reground just dont know what to kind to get any ideas?? Thanks

That could get expensive. Nice though that you have found one you like. I do that on occasion when I find one I like also. It kind of insures I'll always have a backup handy.

My HD-7 is in the mail as we speak. It is going to replace my commander, until I can scrounge up some cash to bribe STR to convert a commander to frame lock for me :)
