Well, I couldn't resist with a 25% off coupon to pick up the little 7x10 lathe from HF. I just ordered some tooling from Amazon, and pretty soon there will be no stopping me. I am not sure exactly what it will be good for, but I am going to make some little round things for something :)

That said, what might it contribute to knifemaking? I was thinking I could try my hand at turning down some precise pins, or perhaps even some bushings. I honestly didn't get this for any specific purpose, I just wanted it. It's been a long time since buying something like that. But like always, I feel bad after spending money on something. So, I will need to find something that needs to be made with it :) Anyone else do that, or is it just me?

I bought that model years ago and it is still going strong. I have used it for turning pins, boring out composites for lanyard tubing, making beads, thumb studs, adjusting screws and corby bolts and fabricating parts for 1911's.

Is it absolutely necessary, no, but I like it.

Depends on what type of knives you want to make... Check out Kyle Royer on YouTube, he uses his all the time, but he does a lot of take down builds and hidden tangs.

Check out the video "This Old Tony - The Infamous Mini Lathe!".

Go to YouTube and search the quoted above you will find a 28min video that may provide a bunch of good information for your new lathe & projects. TOT is a fantastic resource, and worth the time to watch.

I have had mine for over 20 years. A must have is a 4" chuck and tail lock
