My TNF Skareb 40, my go to overnight pack, blew the frame this summer on a multi-day bouldering trip, so I finally sent it in and got a 149 dollar giftcard back. I went in today and there was nothing that really caught my eye, nothing I really had to have, and none of their packs really spoke to me. BUT, the cutie behind the sales desk did a really good job of convincing me that the Prophet 40 was the best piece of gear they had in stock, so I bought it. Here are some photos.
It's not as pretty as the Skareb in its gunmetal-and-orange, but the bright red and mid-grey are pretty classy looking. I've got a couple thousand dollars in orange-and-black gear now, with no pack to match it. There's one to match the color scheme on Bergens' catalog but that's some 300 dollars away from being a reality.
I do certainly like the design better. There are no X-framed aluminum poles to break and stick me in the back, just a molded plastic internal reinforcement. Low profile shoulder straps and hip pad, nice bucket style cover instead of a drybag style roll-top, and the little guy fits like a glove. Should make for a nice overnighter/backcountry ski pack/crag pack/trail and town bag, or worst case scenario, a really expensive and stylish laundromat bag. I'm going to need a red-handled HANSA or Mora machete to go with my little red Mora 840.
Nice little camera/cliff bar pocket on the lumbar pad.
I'll put some miles on her and give you the most important part, a function test. We'll see if she's worth her price tag (third-most I've ever spent on a pack....) or if I should have just spent the 149 dollar gift card on socks instead.
