Anyone have any info on new True Temper Axes?

What kind of steel do they use?

How hard is it?

Is it differently hardened?

Where are the heads forged?

Where are the axes assembled?

Thanks in advance if anyone knows anything? I saw some marked "US" but wasn't sure after looking at their website.

Ames owns the True Temper trademark now. Ames also purchased the Woodings-Verona company (mentioned favorably in the book "An Ax to Grind") which has an axe forging facility located in Falls City, Nebraska, and this must be where the "US" stamped True Tempers are made. Seems like most True Tempers at the hardware stores are not stamped "US", and I'm guessing that the unmarked ones are imported from Asia.

As for steel type and heat treatment details, I don't know.

I saw a brand new one not too long ago. It was hung on an ugly red fiberglass handle and had a flat ground edge. That is, where there should have been an edge, it was ground flat and 3/16" wide. Or for the visually inclined, there was \_/ instead of V.
I don't know about the steel but if they're that sloppy about finishing the part of the tool that does the work, I'd be reluctant to give them a chance. That $30 or whatever they want now can buy a lot of PBR, which will cut through a tree about as well and provide much more enjoyment.

Thanks guys. I emailed them and will let you know if I hear anything back from them. Looks like I'll wait for a nice Council or maybe just some PBR lol.

Damn I like this idea a lot.

The ones I have seen in the big stores are ugly, feel cheap, and I know couldnt hang with an old True Temper. The one I saw was made overseas, I cant remember exactly where, I want to say India but I cannot remember for sure.

I got my email back from True Temper. They said that while many of those questions are trade secrets, they did tell me that they are made from high carbon steel and are both made and assembled in the USA.

I went to the website. Nothing on there about USA.

I called the 1800 customer service number.

After many prompts, I was instructed to leave a message.
