Just for the fun of it I started a newbe tutorial on preparing a blank. From cut out to heat treat.

http://knives.mylamb.com/tutorial/grinding1.htm

I'd like some feedback on information I've left out.

I know I'm not an expert or anything, but it was a fun project. So, I'd really like the approval of the real smiths before presenting this information.

Thanks for looking it over,

Steve

PS It's using the new site layout I plan on converting to.

Pretty cool! Left me wanting more though. :D That's one heck of a scribing doohickey you have there.

Well I'm not a smith but that is one fine tutorial Steve!!
You walk the reader right through each step of the process.
It's so well written anyone should be able to follow it.
I especially liked your comment about practice grinding with strips of wood. I think that would help so many people get the hang of it before they moved to steel if they were only patient enough.
Excellent Tutorial Steve!!

Very nicely done! Hey I think I learned something from reading it :D It seems there are so many different ways of making a knife. That should really help someone new to knifemaking. ;)

Beautiful job Steve. I learned several things I want to try. Great photos and very clear instructions.
Thanks for doing this! (and sharing it here)

That's nicely done Steve, very clear presentation, great photos and an excellent layout. Nice slab of granite countertop you have there! :D I'm jealous of your height gauge too, that's just fine. Far better than my little centerline scribe!

I noticed that you grind the finger seams out of your gloves too. :) I've taken to wrapping duct tape around those areas, it's easy to replace...and it needs a lot of replacement. But I just use cheap leather gloves, nothing sexy about my operation!

I think the next one should be your stone finishing process. -- Not that I'm greedy or anything...

The pics are great the descriptions clear - Thanks so much for the help & inspiration.........

Keep going! Adding all the steps to making a fixed blade would make that a very clear and complete tutorial, and an excellent resource for all those 'how do I make a knife' questions that pop up so often.

Gee thanks gang!

I've updated almost every page and added a page on the tools (Dave, I think you'll be suprise to learn about the granite!)

Mete, I hope Dan adds a link to his tutorial list. I'd be honored.

Again, if anyone has an idea for something I left out, please let me know. I hope to produce another one or two as the process progresses.

Steve

Nice tip on the granite too -- I just called a local company and they got plenty to give away. :D

Great tutorial Steve. I had a couple fellas here in the past few weeks and I don't think I explained things nearly as clear in person as you did "virtually". Great descriptions and clear pictures are definately the key. Great job.
Where were you, with this, about 4 years ago!!! ;) :D ;)
