I had a GE that expired about 1 month after the warranty. I later learned they had a class action suit of some sort against a whole series of defective TV's.

Personally, I have had expceptionally good service from the mid-grade Toshiba models. Modest prices and superior quality. What more could you ask for?

I have also had good service from a Phillips which was an upper end model from their line.

Consumer reports rates the Toshiba's highly and my personal experience confirms this. For something in the $400-500 range, that will get you a 27 inch model pretty easily. The 32's are about $600.

Sony's are darn good as well but, seem to priced a little above the competition when I went shopping for similar features last time.

I have a Sony, and am happy with it. Yes they are priced higher than competitors. They also have feateures like a flat screen, and from what I have seen I think it is worth the money. I gues it all dpends on how big a TV you really want to get. If you put that money into a smaller screen size you can get better quality, or a bigger screen with slightly less quality. Either option is fine, depending on what you really want.

Erik brings up a good point about the flat screens. Sony does good advertising about their "WEGA" TVs and screens but, they are not the only 'flat' screen manufacturer. Some screens that aren't marketed as flat are virtually so.

If you are placing your TV where reflections off widows, from lights or, direct sun will be an issue, a FLAT screen will help cut the glare considerably. This effect can be commonly see at work where older computers with curved monitors are hard to work with due to flourescent lights above but, newer flat screens are crystal clear (glare free).

I bought the Sony FS100 27" for myself as a Christmas present recently and I've been real happy with it. It has 16x9 enhanced mode which basically moves resolution that was used on the 'black bars' to the picture when watching wide screen dvd's. Cool feature. Toshiba and Samsung make 27" tv's in your price range that have good reputations.

Advent seems to be a mixed bag. Everything I have read about them say there is a reason for them being $100-150 cheaper than the better brands. If you check around on some of the Home Theater forums you will find that their quality control isn't the best.

Good luck and let us know which you choose.

Sony = hecho en Mexico

Toshiba = Made in America

Consumer Reports = Toshiba's reliability > Sony's reliability

Advent's are Sony Trinitron clones. Poor quality. Go for a Panasonic Flat screen or a Sony. They have the most distortion free direct view T.Vs. Look for one open box coming up in the next few weeks. The holidays = returns which will give you like 30% or so off of retail. Not bad for a 2 week old tv with full warranty. Scout around you'll find a deal.

Not true anymore, Mike. I work in the Sony plant here in PA, and we stopped making the 43HT over a year ago when production went to Mexico. The 53HS followed after that, and I'm not really sure what else they're making down there now.

Thanks for the clarification. I loved the original Sony profeel monitors. The Sony TCM-D5 is still tops in my book.

I stand corrected! I work in Sony's Oradell sales office and I'm not in the least surprised that we're out of the loop. We just had a strategy meeting that dispensed that very "made in the Mt. Pleasant plant" factoid.

That said, Sony TV's are, IMHO, the best on the market. In the field, I haven't seen reliability issues above the usual (less than 1% return), now that the Grand WEGA's have the bugs ironed out.

Now, our audio gear? Well.......

ok well i got a really good deal on the sony wega 27in kfs100 model like 100.00 off the regular price so i got it so-far so good, really nice picture quality, bought an xbox as well and that seems to look nice as well. thanks for all the input it was helpful.
