has anybody heard about the new uk penknife?(spyderco)its made in usa and is only $38?wtf?:confused:

You can thank FRN handles and GIN-1 steel for the price. the knife isn't quite my cup of tea but that's still a really good price.

I personally think the new UKPK makes a little more sense. I have the original one and while yes it's a good knife it confuses me a little. I just don't think a slip joint needs s30v steel and a $100 price tag. I don't think most UKPK owners will use thiers to such a degree that the edge holding of the s30v is really necessarry. Maybe make the Caly 3 in Golden and use s30v? I would like to have seen a FRN handle in foliage green with a FFG drop point 440c blade. Oh well. I think the GIN-1 will be good and the price is great. I might pick up a gray one.

What is the confusion & WTF'ing about?

@canook:
Since they are made in Golden, CO, USA Earth as is CPM-S30V (USA Earth that is) - it makes sense from a cost perspective since it is readily available and familiar to work with. Most knives made in Golden, CO are CPM-S30V (and CTS steel). Luckily, the state I live in does not have many (if any at all thanks to a new law) knife restrictions so a UKPK is not an option as long as locking knives are available. If I need a slipjoint I'll carry a USA made Schrade or Case knife.

My understanding is that the blade for the FRN UKPK is going to change from GIN-1 to Carpenter BD-1. I have the rescue orange UKPK and it is a great knife. I have a number of "traditional" slippies, but really appreciate the ergonomics of the UKPK. Place of origin is not a big issue for me, QC of the knife is, my Standard Issue and Alox Soldier get a lot of pocket time.

Mind if I ask where you heard that? I'm not doubting you, I'm just curious.

I can't wait for them to release the leaf blade versions. IIRC, Knifecenter already has the drop point versions listed as "In Stock".
