Hello
I just got my first CRK this week. An Umnumzaan. I love it. One issue. It is really difficult to flick open. I have other frame lock knives and know to avoid putting pressure on the lock bar or pocket clip. It just seems overly tight. If I hold the frame lock in the open position, the knife does not move freely. Does this seem to be a reason for a trip back to Idaho? I have seen other Umnumzaan's open much easier on youtube. Opinions from other owners welcome.
thanks
LL

Have you tried to loosen the pivot just a hair? Zaans are tight precision machined tools. Make sure to push the thumbstuds toward the end of the knife, not out laterally from it.

I am pushing parallel to the handle. Doesn't this knife require a special tool to adjust the pivot?

Give it some time, it will ease a bit with use. Also remember that CRK doesn't recommend flipping.

Trav and Tetsujin are right. Either loosen the pivot or give it time to work in.

Let it break in, then after a while, take it apart, grease it up with the CRK flor, and it will loosen up, and be easier to thumb flick

I got mine friday AM and it was super smooth but a little tight. I have been playing with it constantly since i got it and it is already getting looser. I have no problem with a thumb flick w/o wrist action and if I get my finger on the stud right I can even spydie flick it!

I will give it some time. The part that seems the tightest is the ball bearing lock. I really like this knife. It is beefier than I expected and almost feels like a fixed blade when open.

My experience was similar.

Give it a little time to get used to you.

The tension on the pivot for the Umnumzaan is adjustable. Unlike the Sebneza which uses a bushing system for its pivot the Umnum is more similar to most liner locks.
If its too tight than all it needs is a little loosening. It does requires a special tool that CRK makes and sells to loosen the pivot especially when it has loc-tite in it.
But once the loc tites broken the pivot is easy to loosen and tighten with just your thumb and finger.

give it some time, open close it at least 100 times or so, or get yourself to get used to it, it's not like most other knives around

mine flicks well but it's a bit harder than say a zt 0550 or most knives
for a reason, i'ts made to have 0 play, to be more secure, have a better lock and this is "negative" for smoothness or easyness to open

I prefer it like it is
a little harder but safer..

You can tighten or loosen the pivot to your heart's content to get the right amount of blade tension. An Umumzaan can be easily flippable.

I prefer blade retention over "flippability" so I've tightened mine done quite a bit.

When I first got mine I was really disappointed with its difficulty in opening and closing, after playing with it in front of the TV for a day or two I can open it faster than my ZT301. Closing it with one hand is still hit and miss. Just give it some time.

Haha! I actually now have a callus on the tip of my thumb from my Um, my Android's touch screen doesn't recognize my thumb tip on the left side now. Worth IT, I love my Umnumzaan and have been carrying it primarily since I picked it up in December.

For a lot of knife companies, the phosphor-bronze bushings they use are not smooth. IE, they aren't polished yet. As you use the knife and keep opening and closing it, it will smooth out. I know I had a little benchmade mini-grip that was really tight. No blade play, just a little tight. as I kept using it, it broke in well and was great!

Add a little grease if you want, but otherwise just give it some time. if you are still having trouble in like a few days hop back on here and get some further instruction.

Hope that helps :)

I bought the kit and losened the pivot...I loosened it about the same as the width of one of the holes in the pivot screws....very very slight.. Super smooth and still really tight.

Mine was really tight when I received it, as most everyone has stated...kept working it and it will thumb flick open as fast any assist opening knife...was really tight initially but works like butter now. Did order a tool kit for mine but only plan on opening it when it needs an overhaul. One SWEET knife...
