New Umnumzaan VS Old Umnumzaan?

I own a older Umnumzaan before they beveled the lock bar and it glides allmost like its IKBS its smoother then my sebenza (that just got back from the spa) as well as the lock bar doesnt seem very stiff its not weak either but its perfect tension to unlock it. Now i have just handled a new umnumzaan (birthday was in september so pretty darn recent) and its smooth to open but no where near as smooth as my older one and the tension on the lock bar is rather stiff. Has the tension been changed because of problems they where having? (people thinking the lock up is off and trying to bend it so it locks up earlier?)

I have two of the original Umnumzaans and I can say that I have grown to prefer the action on those over the Sebenza. I found on the newer Umnumzaan the cut out on the lock bar made it harder to unlock for me, that may have been what made it feel like the tension was stronger rather than it really being stonger. The detent actually is stronger on the newer knives though, having a hole in the blade over a dimple like the original knives do. That makes it harder to start the blade moving and again perhaps makes it feel stiffer that it really is. As far as I know the pivot pin, washers, detent and tolerances are all the same so there should be no reason as far as those to see any changes in the action that I can fathom.

Interesting, I didn't know that the newer ones had a hole that went all the way through the blade. Guess mine is old then.

I concur.

I'd have to agree. I just picked up a S35VN Umnumzaan (new version) and while I thought I would like the relief on the lockbar, I found that it made the knife a little less comfortable to hold. The detent is definitely stronger, which means that once you get past the resistance it feels like the knife snaps open a little faster. I don't like the Idaho made logo.

As far as smoothness, a new Sebenza or Umnum will never be as smooth as one that has been broken in. Once they're broken in properly they're smooth like glass.

I just bought a new umnum(birthdate sept 2011), and LOVE the new larger beveled out lock bar. I had an older one, and there (to me) wasn't enough purchase on it. As for the smoothness, the new one is smooth, but there is a place inside the pivot where it seems to drag or get get caught up a little. I'm chalking this up to being new, and not worried about it at all.

So do I understand this right that on the new version the hole in the blade is normal? I have hole for the pivot probably and when I m opening the knife I can see a little hole in the back of the blade. Is that normal?

Anyone? Please tell me if it is normal and if so then for what purpose is there. This is my first CRK.

The Umnumzaan and I believe all CRKs do now have a drilled through hole for the detent. It is totally normal. :)

Any chance you're interested in selling one of those Umnumzaan's? Or know of any place I can stinkin find one?

edit: didn't notice this was a revived incredibly old thread...nevermind :p

recently received a june 2009 umnumzaan, noticed the dimple hole detent and the much weaker detent compared to the drilled through detent hole. Anyone care to share some photos on the dimple? i'll upload mine later.
